We had the good fortune of connecting with Idalia Salsamendi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Idalia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After almost a decade of working in the fashion industry, I wanted to create a company that people could come to and know that they will be listened to and valued. I am all about the bigger picture – whether I am developing an impactful business strategy for an influencer or spearheading a creative campaign for a luxury brand, my focus is always on providing my clients with the guidance they need to not only succeed but to flourish.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After having worked as a model agent at Ford Models in Los Angeles, and eventually moving to Next Model Management and then NYC where I ran the Talent Division, I was one of the first three agents in the world to represent influencers (“bloggers” as they were known back in the day) including Chiara Ferragni, and Danielle Bernstein. I then left corporate America and started my own company, Idalia INC. which is a top destination for brands and influencers looking to exceed the conventional strategies of digital marketing, providing innovative services aimed at propeling careers. Idalia INC. offers services that range from social media campaigns, to influencer casting and website building, as well as online courses and masterclasses.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s get one thing crystal clear about Miami (especially its cuisine) – Cuban culture is everywhere, and thank God for that! My first stop when I land is Versailles. Forget France’s palace, this Cuban diner situated in Miami’s iconic “Calle Ocho” street is a must-do. There will be a wait. You may think to yourself that it looks like a fancy interpretation of what a diner may have looked like in the 1970s. But trust me, it’s all part of the charm and experience. You’ll see locals and you’ll see celebrities. You’ll see people only speaking in Spanish with their enticing Cuban accents. You’ll see tourists with thick southern drawls. You’ll be enchanted by it all. My favorite dishes are the Vaca Frita (literal transition is Fried Cow), Croquetas, and Mariquitas. Google all three. The visuals will have your mouth watering.
When you make it to the beach, stop by Joe’s Stone Crab, another Miami icon right in the heart of South Beach. This is not just a restaurant, it is an institution. Built in 1913 when Miami Beach wasn’t even a city, it’s still family owned and serving the best seafood in town. They’re infamous for their stone crabs and key lime pie. Every time I’m back in town, my mom and I make it a point to go there.
If you want to venture out and live like the locals, definitely head to the tree-lined streets of Coconut Grove, one of Miami’s most iconic neighborhoods. From Michelin starred restaurants like Ariete, to iconic dive bars like Barracuda, there’s something for everyone. They recently renovated it’s main shopping strip, so don’t forget your credit card!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge shoutout to my mom and my aunt – being raised by such independent women has been a blessing and I’m thankful for their guidance as I navigate my way through life. On a professional level, Alexis Borges, president of Next in Los Angeles, has been an incredible mentor to me. He taught me very early on to have zero tolerance for business without ethics.
