We had the good fortune of connecting with Imani Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Imani, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing about the makeup industry that many people don’t realize is how much relationships and networking matter. Talent is important, but connections often play an even bigger role in securing opportunities. It’s a highly competitive field, and success isn’t always just about skill—it’s about visibility, reputation, and being in the right circles.

In my professional experience, there are incredibly talented artists who go unnoticed simply because they haven’t built the right connections, while others with less technical skill thrive because they understand the power of networking. It’s not just about what you can do; it’s about who knows you can do it.

Building genuine relationships, maintaining professionalism, and making sure your work speaks for itself in the right spaces are just as crucial as mastering technique!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
From the very beginning, I had to work extremely hard to get to where I am today. Nothing was handed to me—I had to put my pride aside countless times to learn, grow, and work alongside other talented professionals. Success in this industry isn’t just about skill; it’s about being willing to evolve, take advice, and stay dedicated even when things get tough. One of the biggest turning points in my journey was when my husband gifted me the deposit for my business suite. That moment wasn’t just about securing a space—it was a reminder that someone believed in me as much as I believed in myself.

But let’s be real, I wouldn’t have nearly as much success if it weren’t for my work ethic and the kindhearted dedication I bring to every client. People want to work with me not just because of my talent, but because they know I genuinely care. My brand, Beats By Imani, isn’t just about makeup—it’s about the experience. When you sit in my chair, you’re not just getting a service, you’re stepping into a space designed specifically for you. It’s a luxury experience tailored to your needs, where you can relax with complimentary drinks and snacks, have real conversations about life, and leave feeling like the best version of yourself.

Getting here wasn’t easy. I faced challenges, from self-doubt to navigating the competitive beauty industry. But I’ve learned that perseverance, humility, and authenticity will always set you apart. I want the world to know that I see myself as more than just a makeup artist—I’m a creative outlet for my clients, providing both high-quality artistry and a safe space where they can feel valued and celebrated.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week, we’d have the best time, no question. South Florida has a little bit of everything—beaches, nightlife, amazing food—so I’d make sure they get the full experience, from Miami’s energy to the hidden gems in Sunrise.

Day 1: Welcome to Florida, Let’s Eat
•Pick them up, catch up over a fresh, build-your-own bowl at Bolay in Sunrise.
•Hit Las Olas Beach for some sun and people-watching.
•Get dressed up for dinner at YOLO—good food, great drinks, and the perfect first-night-out spot.

Day 2: Miami Art & Culture
•Start the day with coffee and a pastry at Zak the Baker in Wynwood.
•Walk through Wynwood Walls, take cute pics, maybe pop into some boutiques.
•Grab tacos and margaritas at Bakan because, let’s be real, we deserve it.
•Explore Little Havana—Cuban coffee, live music, and a whole lot of flavor.
•End the night with drinks at The Wharf Miami, a perfect waterfront vibe.

Day 3: Beach & Shopping
•Brunch at The Front Porch Café in Miami Beach.
•Spend the morning at South Beach, rent bikes, or just lay out like royalty.
•Afternoon shopping at Aventura Mall, because retail therapy is essential.
•Dinner at Komodo in Brickell—dim lighting, great sushi, and a whole vibe.

Day 4: Adventure Mode
•Wake up early for an Everglades airboat tour—yes, we’re seeing gators.
•Lunch at The Melting Pot in Sunrise, because fondue is fun and underrated.
•Burn off that cheese at Xtreme Action Park—go-karts, arcade games, and drinks.

Day 5: Self-Care & Bougie Energy
•Brunch at Big City Tavern in Fort Lauderdale.
•Spa day at The Standard Spa massages, sauna, and relaxation only.
•Private sunset yacht rental or a boat tour, because why not feel rich for a day?
•Dinner at Smith & Wollensky, where the steak and ocean views are both top-tier.

Day 6: Foodie Heaven & Nightlife
• Breakfast at B Bistro + Bakery in Brickell, because croissants fix everything.
•Window-shop (or splurge) in Miami’s Design District—luxury, art, and vibes.
•Fancy dinner at Papi Steak, where the energy is just as good as the food.
•Night out at LIV or E11EVEN, or if we’re feeling chill, rooftop cocktails at Sugar.

Day 7: Soaking Up the Last Moments
•One last brunch at Green Bar & Kitchen, because balance.
•Walk Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, take in the views, maybe rent bikes.
•A final sweet treat at Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor before heading to the airport.

By the end of the week, my bestie would have gotten the full South Florida experience—beaches, culture, food, adventure, and a little bit of luxury. And of course, they’d be planning their next trip back before they even leave!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a huge shoutout to my former mentor, Shanique, for seeing potential in me before I even saw it in myself. She played such a big role in helping me realize that makeup wasn’t just a passion—it could be a career and a business. Her guidance gave me the confidence to take my artistry seriously and step into the beauty industry with purpose.

I also have to shout out my part-time job as a beauty advisor at Sephora. It’s been such a valuable experience, not just for honing my skills, but for networking and expanding my knowledge. Being surrounded by so many different brands, products, and artists has helped me grow in ways I never expected. It’s one thing to love makeup, but having hands-on experience in the industry has truly elevated my craft.
