We had the good fortune of connecting with Isis Mesa-Rubin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Isis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The Intuitive Womb was created out of a deep passion for all things birth and motherhood. My own journey and experiences from pregnancy, birth, and motherhood changed the way I view myself and the world. I recognized then the importance of standing in your power and trusting our bodies’ innate ability to birth. Simply put, it left me with a deep respect for women, their power, and admiration for the birthing process. Since then, I have been a student of the sacred nature of birth, its mysteries, and the life-changing experience of motherhood. I wholeheartedly believe that a conscious and informed birth not only has the ability to positively impact the birthing person’s life, but also that of their baby, family, community, and humanity as a whole. I recognize that in our society there’s a lack of knowledge about birth which often leads to a lack of reverence, respect, and acknowledgment of this transformative and sacred process. As a birth worker and founder of The Intuitive Womb, my mission is to honor, educate, and empower women and their families to trust their bodies and become active participants in their birth process and life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a doula and childbirth educator, and for those who don’t know a doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support while advocating for the best care for their client. What I love most about what I do is witnessing the power of birth and seeing women step into their power. There’s nothing more beautiful and sacred than that.

Ever since I could remember I have always been fascinated with birth. However, it was until I had my children that I realized this was my calling. I finally decided that I needed to pursue my passion and I attended doula training to begin my certification process. Within a few hours of the training, I knew this was what I was meant to do. I wasn’t sure how my family and friends would take the news that I was changing career paths, but to my surprise the response I kept getting is “you would be so good at that” or “I can totally see you do that”. Not long after, friends who were pregnant asked for my support and began telling their friends. It all happened very organically and rather quickly.

What I learned is that there’s so much work to do around birth. There’s so much stigma, biases, and fear-mongering as it relates to childbirth. That realization has brought me to broaden my mission to incorporate advocacy and education in my work. Another lesson I’ve learned is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to birth. Every birth experience is unique, and each client has their own set of needs and preferences. As a doula, my role is to meet them where they are and to be a source of unwavering non-judgmental support.

Honestly, this business has very little to do with me and everything to do with the women I get the honor to support and walk beside. With that said, I would like the world to know is that birth matters. After all, everyone has been born and has participated in the process in one way or the other. The experience of childbirth impacts the birthing person’s emotions, mind, body, and spirit for the rest of their life. Ask any person who has given birth and they can vividly share their experience even decades later. What I’ve found from speaking to many women is that what they remember most is how they were supported and cared for during labor and delivery. My hope is that The Intuitive Womb can be a beacon of light to those yearning for support, acknowledgment, reassurance, and community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would start off with breakfast at Greenstreet Cafe and then walk around the shops at the groove. Followed by some delicious vegan bites at Planta Queen, and a stroll around Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. For dinner, we would head to Little Havana for Cuban food at Versailles Restaurant, ice cream for dessert at Azucar, and then end the night dancing away at Ball & Chain. The next day we would head to Wynwood for brunch at Bistro Cafe followed by a long walk admiring the colorful art on the walls with Panther coffee in hand. Later that day, we head to Miami Beach for lunch at Yardbird Table & Bar and walk around Lincoln Road and Espanola Way. We would end our day walking on the beach during sunset before heading to dinner for some delicious Italian food at II Pastaiolo.

The itinerary showcases Miami’s unique, colorful, and vibrant atmosphere.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, my children for choosing me as their mother and showing me how strong and powerful I am. They are my greatest teachers and inspiration. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today if it weren’t for them. A very special shout-out to my husband for his unwavering support and encouragement. I also want to recognize all the women in my life, including those I’ve never met but whose impact has shaped my life’s work.
