We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaclyn Boykin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaclyn, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My business is ideal for women in my community and across many demographics to gain confidence, peace and freedom to choose how they spend their time. To many, cosmetic tattoo is about vanity. To me, it’s about freedom; freedom from being a slave to your makeup bag. Freedom to choose to cross one thing off your list without the guilt of not achieving another. Freedom to get on with the responsibilities of your day while knowing you look like the best version of yourself!
So many of us, especially women and specifically mothers, are wearing so many hats. There is a lot of guilt associated with the choices women are forced to make every day and I’m willing to bet 9 times out of 10, they put others needs first. For example, it’s in a mother’s nature to be sacrificial…If you have to choose whether to put makeup on or pack your child’s lunch, the kiddos win every day.
Instead of having to make that choice, why not take care of your responsibilities and not have to choose? Why not allow yourself to feel good about hitting the gym without time to put on a full face before work? Or squeezing in that extra time doing exactly what you want to do instead of striving to meet an ideal version of today’s parent?
The goal at WakeUp MakeUp is for women to leave looking like the best version of themselves and feeling capable and in control of their days.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
WakeUp MakeUp helps women and men address thin, sparse eyebrows, asymmetrical lips and barely there lashes. I say it often, but the goal is for each client to look like the best version of THEMSELVES. Each cosmetic tattoo is custom-designed and caters to each individuals’ taste and lifestyle. It would be easy to draw the same brows on every face. I refuse to give anyone permanent makeup that does not suit them. Sometimes that meant a slower success level, but its more valuable to me in the end.
I love the opportunity to help women REGAIN what they once had. So many women deal with the effects of hormonal fluctuations, thyroid disorders, alopecia, and a list of autoimmune issues that rob them prematurely of their youth and cause hair loss.
My own mother suffers from Graves Disease and Type 1 Diabetes. I was finally able to design eyebrows for her recently. It was an emotional experience for both of us to say the least! She looks like herself and couldn’t be happier. Everyone deserves to feel good in their own skin and I’m very proud I can help with that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Franklin Park Conservatory has something for everyone and is an adventure year-round! They offer classes, events and the seasonal displays can’t be beat. I would definitely spend the bulk of my time there!
A meal at Lindey’s in German Village is a must! It’s a restaurant with the type of food and service that proves they want you back. The staff is impeccable. Also of note is Asterisk Supper Club in Uptown Westerville with a tour of Uptown afterward. The suburb is an amazing place to spend time as a family with a walkable uptown area and many parks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a wonderful support system in my family and also in my local community. There are countless women entrepreneurs who truly want the best for each other. Any time I feel discouraged, there is someone counting my blessings for me. Joslyn Crowl, of Joslyn Crowl Photography has taught me a lot about supporting your local community and about there being plenty of room at the table for all that would like their chance.
