We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaime & Star Triana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaime & Star, how does your business help the community?
We moved from California to South Florida in 2012 and opened our healing arts center, JaiStar Studios. One of the things that brought us to Florida was the lack of ecstatic dance, which we had been pioneering since 2004. With only a couple of yoga studios in 2012, the market was wide open for something new, something that offered more than just yoga classes. Our healing arts center offers a place where people can come to heal, awaken their innate gifts, and receive practices that can transform their life. For the past ten years we have helped thousands of people through our healing dance, music and art. Promoting wellness, both physical and mental, we began a yearly festival. We bring community leaders, facilitators, musicians and healers together for a two day weekend, where people come from all over Florida and out of state as well. Our biggest contribution is that throughout the year, we bring people together at our events, classes and festival. We have the honor of watching people take quantum leaps in their spiritual healing process and make transformational changes in their lives. Bringing people together for the purpose of healing is our largest contribution to the community. We believe that community grows prosperity and South Florida has made us very rich.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
While spending six months in silence, during deep meditation and stillness one day, movement began to awaken at the bottom of my spine. My spine began to move and vibrate until my entire body was vibrating. As I opened my eyes, everything was a blur and I experienced myself and creation around me vibrating in unison and in this profound experience I heard these words: “Ecstatic Dance is the new yoga.”

My first thought was, “What is Ecstatic Dance?”

I had left my corporate job and jet setting lifestyle to move to India and become a yoga teacher. When I received this message, I was living at an ashram in India, completing my teacher training. After receiving the message, this set me on a course that would change my life forever. I traveled the world to learn about ecstatic dance and conscious movement practices.

During my journey I discovered that I was not in my body. I was disconnected from my body though I was doing lots of yoga and meditation, there was something missing. When I experienced ecstatic dance, I knew I had found the missing piece. I traveled the world and studied many forms of conscious dance and movement.

The dance helped me to process emotions and release stress and tension from my body. I learned that through healing dance practices that natural states of meditation arise, while oxytocin, endorphins and chemicals in our body are released that promote feelings of happiness, joy and bliss.

I realized that once you become self-aware and see the dance or story you are in, you can then begin to change it. In the dance, you give past trauma, stress, and tension a place to be expressed and released. When you dance, you let go of the old and open up to new ways of being.

Through the journey of discovering the profound healing affects of dance, I created a practice, program and book called Heal Through Dance. In the body of work that I offer, I blend together the ancient teachings of yoga and meditation with the modern practices of somatic movement and ecstatic dance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My dance studio is walking distance to the white sandy beaches of Lake Worth Beach so I recommend that everyone stops by the beach for a walk, swim or to have a meal as you soak in the vitamin Sea. Fresh seafood is a must in South Florida, and there are great places to eat at the beach! Viva La Playa is a new fun place we recommend. For everyones inner Vegan, we recommend heading over to Darbsters. which has a sweet outdoor patio and great vegan food. After you take a dip at the beach and have some lunch, I would take a friend to the Japanese gardens for afternoon nature and tea.
