We had the good fortune of connecting with Jakira Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jakira, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business was a continuation of me stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing the new me. After 3 years of hard work, losing a ton of weight and transforming my body, it motivated me to share my motivational slogan with the world! Not only did I want to share how losing weight changed my thought process, I also wanted to offer stylish, and comfortable workout gear while getting it done. My goal was to produce a bold statement that when people would see it, they would not forget it. It’s said that health is wealth, my slogan, body tight/money right is saying the same thing, with just a little more flavor.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I offer comfortable, yet affordable workout gear for both Men and Women. What sets me apart from others is really my passion behind my clothing brand. I am literally a walking testimony to “Body tight, money right” it isn’t just a catchy slogan, it is the motto to a daily life goal for me and so many others. So when people see it, they automatically fall in love with the concept and when they see all the color variations that I offer, they love that as well. For most sneaker heads, my color waves were selected to match all Jordan/Nike variations. I am most proud of how many people rock with my brand/clothing line, it’s still surreal to be out and seeing people wearing something you created. Starting out it was a little bumpy because when you have your name attached to a brand you want to ensure you are providing quality products and on top of that I am a perfectionist. So at the start, trying to figure out good quality for clothing that were both sporty to wear but also comfortable and durable to workout in was a little challenging. I tested a lot of different brands and ways of printing. There were many trial and errors, because my goal was to ensure that I offered good and quality products, at a good price. Once I figured that out, it’s been a bit smoother. The one major lesson I have learned along the way is you that cannot be afraid to fail. If you have an idea try it, if it does not work, try it differently. I just want my story to motivate others, I want them to know that they can do it too!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, we would definitely hit the gym everyday (lol). We would go to Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale beach, because I love the beach. For fun we would visit Strike 10, Top Golf and hit Orlando to do the theme parks. We would hang out and do a little shopping at Bal Harbour, Aventura and Sawgrass Malls. For food and drinks we must visit Rickey’s Sports Bar (in Pembroke Pines), Tap 42, Just Spoons, Wing Stop, Crafty Crab and The Licking.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A business is only as strong as its supporters. A marketing group called South Promo has played a major role in my success. They have had multiple pop-up shops for small blacked owned business which really helped me in getting my name out there when I started my business about a year ago. My family and friends play a huge role in my success as well. They are always supporting by buying the latest gear, sharing my items on social media, and when working out or just out and about they wear my gear. Shout out to all my supporters. Friends and family play a huge role and one of the strongest ways for a small business to be successful.
