We had the good fortune of connecting with James Fríor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, why did you pursue a creative career?
For as long as I can remember I’ve been passionate about music. I played the drums all throughout my childhood and became obsessed with learning more and more instruments along the way. During High school I struggled with some serious mental health issues. I latched onto music as an outlet for coping with it. I realized through this time that I needed to pursue an artistic career in music. It is the one thing that I can do to stay completely mindful and in the moment. Over time I’ve taught myself how to produce, record, write and engineer my songs and I love the entire process of it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from others is my passion for learning every aspect of the music itself. Through trial and error and a lot of research, I’ve taught myself production, engineering, recording and songwriting. This has helped me so much because I don’t have to wait around for anybody else in order to create a song. I understand every detail that goes into my work and can tweak it however I envision. The biggest challenge I’ve faced is the self doubt that comes with being an artist. I didn’t know many other people in a similar situation to me so it was difficult to navigate through the early stages of my journey. Luckily I was able to develop positive thinking patterns and mindsets to overcome the self doubt and overthinking. The biggest lessons I’ve learned are to always try to stay present and mindful, be grateful everyday, and keep a positive outlook. Every situation has both positives and negatives, but its all about which perspective you choose to see. Being an artist comes with a lot of failure, and I’ve learned that every failure is just a lesson to grow and move forward with.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I like New York because of its wide variety of environments. I’d want to show them the city of course, but id also want to show them the nature that’s a bit north of the city. Ive always loved being in the city because of its amazing energy, but being in nature is where I find my peace. So id probably want to take them to both to get a whole experience in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Id like to shoutout my mom and dad. They have been there for me through all the highs and lows I’ve expirienced. It’s safe to say I wasn’t the easiest son to parent. Ive always leaned towards a riskier and less normal route in my life, yet they have stuck by my side and supported me every step of the way. They love hearing my songs and always want to help out and give their ideas or feedback. I am so grateful to have such caring, loving and supportive parents along my journey.
