We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Angelis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
That no one is coming to help you or save you. If you want something…YOU have to go for it. You have to do what it takes, and put the work into your business, in order to receive the outcome or success that you are looking for. The good news is that there is a ton of people and resources out there to help you, but you alone have to take the steps in order to get there. No one is going to hold your hand or push you when you own your own business. You have to push yourself….even when you don’t feel like it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Permanent Makeup, Saline Tattoo Removal, Eyelash Artist and…I love what I do! I believe what sets me a part from others is that I genuinely care about my clients needs and desires. I take my time and listen to their questions or concerns, and I truly want to make them so happy, and feel more confident! I treat others like I want to be treated and customer service is everything to me! Art has always been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. My parents even set up an art room for me to create as a child where I would paint and do my arts and crafts. It allowed me to escape and be as creative as my heart desired. It was the best! As I got older I turned my focus and my love for art into doing Makeup, or “painting faces” as I always said. I became a Makeup Artist for MAC Cosmetics, and I also did Makeup for ladies that were going to the prom, parties/events, and for their wedding day. During that time I got married, had my son, and then got divorced when my son was only 1 years old. Let me tell you….that was the hardest time of my life, mentally and financially. But that dark time in my life taught me so much about myself and what I am capable of doing when my world seems to be falling apart. I did what I had to do to take care of my son and I, even when I felt like I was so sad and I couldn’t do it. I was on food stamps and struggled a lot when my son was little. I felt such shame and embarrassment for where I was at in my life at that time. I worked in the restaurant business for years, and loved it, but I knew I wanted more. Everyone was buzzing about Microblading and a friend of mine and I were talking about it and she was like….”you should do Microblading”. And the rest is history! I literally enrolled in a Microblading course that day! The training wasn’t easy and I had to put a lot of time into honing my craft for months and months after. I would practice before and after work, and eventually my trainer gave me the green light to take my first client. After that I worked in a tattoo shop, while I continued to work in the restaurant, but knew I wanted to have my own studio. So, in January 2020 I got my licenses and in February I opened my doors, but in March….I closed them due to Covid-19. Never did I dream that I would be a first time business owner, and a new artist, starting out in a Global Pandemic. But but that is life. There a lot of unforseen twists and turns that we are not prepared for.. And so being a new business owner has not been easy for me, but then again life isn’t easy for most of us. I dug deep, I did a lot of research, I learned more than I ever have, I hired a coach (all on credit) and I did what I had to do so that when I reopened my doors I would flourish! I am a fighter and I give all of my energy, my heart and my soul to everything that I am passionate about! I am a Scorpio, type A female, originally from New York so you know I am a straight shooter that doesn’t mess around! And the same goes for the quality and care that I put into all of my clients needs when they receive a service from me. We start out as strangers and become friends….and I love that! I am truly grateful for all of my struggles and lessons throughout this crazy life because it has brought me here, and I am so lucky that I get to do what I do! I can finally look in the mirror at myself, no more shame and no more embarrassment, and I can say that I am proud of me! I did it. And my beautiful son was by my side watching me give my all to growing as a person and putting in the time and work to fulfill a dream of mine. So, now he has the example to help him to believe that if you want something for yourself, you can have it! You have to put blood, sweat, and tears into it…but it will all be worth it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My boyfriend, son, and I love to go out to eat! We love Naked Taco, TAP 42, Big Bear, Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza which are all in Coral Springs! Papa’ s Raw Bar in Lighthouse Point, Calypso in Pompano Beach and Loch Bar in Boca Raton, Pirate Republic in Ft. Lauderdale are a few more of our favorite spots. They all have great environments, outstanding customer service, and delicious food!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Emily Joy, CEO of Dollistic and Coach from Pretty Rich Bosses! Emily Joy was first my business coach, and then became my friend. She taught me so much about expanding my business and pushed me to grow, not just as a business owner but as a person. I will forever be greatful to her and the creator of PBR, Shelia Bella for having such a valuable program like this available to help new business owners in the beauty industry! Emily Joy is such an amazing human being…I love that girl!
