We had the good fortune of connecting with Jan Carroll and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jan, how do you think about risk?
Risk is something I don’t give too much thought to honestly. When I have an idea or make a decision I generally plan and execute pretty quickly. My intuition guides me in most decisions I make. With all big decisions its always a good idea to weigh your options but I don’t let the ‘what ifs’ dictate my plan. I tend to live pretty fearlessly in all aspects of my life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
People always ask me how I got here, what was my plan. I honestly never had one. I was raised to be the best at whatever you decided to do. My father gifted me with an incredible work ethic and I have a tenacious spirit. There have been many times along the road that I had no idea what I was doing when handed a new position, but professionally I have always lived by the 90 day rule. I give myself 90 days to master a position. If that meant working day and night then that’s what I did. I was never afraid to seek out those above me for experience and advice. I am a big believer that you never, ever stop learning. I have owned this business for 15 years and I learn something everyday. If you think you’ve reached “the top” and you sit back, you’re dead in the water. Every industry ebbs and flows, goes through changes as new generations emerge. Staying on top of those changes while staying true to yourself is key. Everyone that has ever worked for me will tell you I am honest, no matter what, I care more than most and I’m tough but fair.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely hit up my favorite little Italian place for the best pasta ever. Il Paesano in Ft. Lauderdale is a must whenever I have friends in town. We would have to do a little day drinking and fabulous eating at Kaluz in Ft. Lauderdale and Lucky Fish in Pompano Beach. No trip is complete without a trip to my favorite little dive bar The Briny in Pompano Beach. If time allows I love the everglades, it’s the only ecosystem in the world of it’s kind so I always try to get visitors out there. Last but not least is time at the beach or out on the boat enjoying the open water.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have always said I owe much of my opportunity for success to my ex-husband. He let me mortgage our house initially to start the business and he never doubted me. I don’t know if I’d be here without his support and trust.
