We had the good fortune of connecting with Jana Chebat and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jana, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
One thing I’ve learned about life, is that in order to make things happen, you need to work hard and take risks. I know that risk is a scary concept for many people, but I do not consider myself risk averse, in fact, it excites me. Thinking of the opportunities on the other side of risk helps drive me, not only in life, but in my career. One component of my career that I enjoy immensely is the variety and the uncertainty of the details on the other side of that call, incident, or issue that needs attention. Some of my biggest successes transpired because of risks I took. Despite the nerves, the fears, or the insecurities I may have had in the moment, taking that leap led to many victories that I would not have had if I decided to play it safe.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I love most about my work and my career is the opportunity that I have to work and help all groups of individuals from all walks of life. I truly enjoy getting to learn about people’s journeys and stories that led them to where they are now. I get to help them in one of their most vulnerable moments and bring justice to them.
In addition to working to help others, I still get excited about the legal system and the chance that I have to make a difference. I first started my career as a paralegal, a job that I initially thought would never be part of my path. I knew I always wanted to help people, but never knew how or what career would fit in order to achieve this goal. That was until I was working at my first law firm, they specialized in foreclosure defense, helping families keep their homes after going through some of the most difficult times in their lives. My passion for law grew while working in that environment. It was then that I realized my drive to attend law school to eventually achieve my goal of helping others by becoming an attorney.
Today, I get the opportunity to work at one of the most prestigious law firms, Goldberg & Rosen in Miami. The fact that I get to learn from the most successful, intelligent, and authentic attorneys has helped me grow in my career. The attorneys zealously advocate for their clients, and they’ve pushed me to be better. Without them, especially Jocelyn Santana, I would never have thought that I could try a case and win a $10 million verdict, but she believed in me and pushed me, and I did. That verdict is one of my biggest successes to date and has been the highlight of my career.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The ability to work and play in Miami is one of the main reasons I love the city. I enjoy experiencing different cultures, restuarants, and exciting nightlife throughout Miami. When my friends visit, I always make it a point to show them Coconut Grove. Incredible restaurants, experiences, and great drinks make it an easy go-to!
If we have more time, I want my friends to take in everything Miami has to offer. I would begin by taking them to the unique art scene of Wynwood and Midtown, followed by some shopping in the Design District. Passing by Brickell for brunch, of course! A stroll through the historic and culturally diverse Little Havana. Then Finishing off the day strolling through Coral Gables and finding a cafe or restaurant to grab some food and drinks.
Miami is a truly unique and beautiful city that is home to various cultures and amazing people. there is never a dull moment and I enjoy showing everyone where I live!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I know that I could not be where I am without the love and support of my family. It is not lost on me that we don’t achieve without the help and support of others. I would like to thank my family extensively for everything they have done. I am who I am because of your unconditional love and steady support.
