We had the good fortune of connecting with Janet Moscarello and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janet, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After many years working for other people, we both felt that if we entered the service industry again it would have to be on our terms. I (Uriah) had wanted to own a used book store for a long time and when the opportunity to purchase the building came up, everything just seemed to fall in line,
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The concept of arc{hive} book + snackery is, we feel, very unique; different from any other places around. It’s a used bookstore with a bar that offers interesting drinks and small plate food options. Our sustainability of having used and re-used – we repurposed a lot of things including items that were in the building when we purchased it – book shelves, table tops, etc. We got here after many decades working in the hospitality industry. Which is never easy, There are some things about starting your own business that are challenging, for sure, but when folks come through and really connect with the space and the books, meet new friends and catch up with old ones, and experience arc{hive} in meaningful ways it’s all worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s so much to do in Warren, even with how small it is. We’d definitely get dinner at Hunky Dory followed up with ice cream at The Wright Scoop. We’d take a day to do the East Bay bike path. Then visit The Collaborative art space to see local art. Grab pasta and gelato from Prica Farina to cook at home. See the sunset over the bay at the Town beach. Go shopping for plants and gifts at The Greenery.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We had a lot of help along the way. At the forefront of this would have to be Uriah’s folks, Elwood and Aubrey. Or, as we like to call them, the barflies. They are self-employed Folk musicians who travel the country entertaining and teaching as Atwater-Donnelly.
They were and are incredibly supportive in so many ways – we truly wouldn’t have been able to get here without their love and support.
