Meet Janira Rivera | Macrame Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Janira Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janira, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Hi there! I am Janira Rivera, naturally from Puerto Rico and I currently live in Miami, Florida. “Tuly” has been my nickname since I was a child, that’s how my mom used to call me. Tuly Studios started at the beginning of this pandemic. I started taking online courses and then ideas began to emerge and little by little I discovered what my hands could create. I started dyeing with Eco-friendly macrame cotton single string in natural dye like avocado, chonineal grana and Indigo. I gave myself the opportunity to give way to a goal, that of having my own creative project. I opened an Instagram page with my wall-hanging arts design the last August 2020.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m still working to get where I want to go professionally. It was very clear since I left high school that one day I would have my own business. Since I was little, I saw my mother and sister run their own businesses. And I said someday I’ll have mine too. The proudest thing is to see my nickname “Tuly” that my mother gave me when I was a child and see it embodied as a brand in my creative business. In my case, this Covid pandemic had to go through to realize my hidden talents and give way to this creative business. I went through many ups and downs in my life, but life’s challenges and every tribulation were necessary to see the “magic in chaos” (like the podcast title of Aisleen Derbez recommended by a friend). I overcome my challenges by facing my fears and having a positive mindset. I try to live in the present and I have always said that it is not in our time but at God’s time. One lesson I’ve learned along the way is to be consistent in my project every day. Every piece that I make I do it with a lot of love and seeing them on the walls of my clients’ houses gives me great satisfaction. My goal is that each piece brings a harmonious touch to my client’s home.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The places in Miami, I would take them are Wynwood Walls, Suviche Wynwood, Bistro cafe, Art by God, South Point, Lincoln Road, Key Biscayne LightHouse for the sunset, Seaquarium, Brickel City center, Margaret Place Park, Pura Vida, Mister o1 Pizza, Coconut Grove.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a doubt, I believe that the support of my family was the impulse to open this business and decide to continue in the technique of knots in macramé. My husband and my father at the beginning helped me to polish and cut the driftwood, which is the material I use to create the pieces. My mother is a key part of the growth of this business. My siblings, niece, and nephew with their unconditional support. Also, some tips from friends dedicated to art, in one way or another have been of great help to improve my project. Seeing the support on social media from family, friends, and strangers sharing my content has been very gratifying. Finally, a book that helped me greatly and change my life was “The Power of Now” and “A Life with Purpose.”
