We had the good fortune of connecting with Janyia Lumsdon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janyia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The reason I started doing hair is because I’ve always had a passion for beauty and self-expression. Growing up, I was the go-to person for family and friends whenever they needed their hair done—whether it was for a special event or just to feel more confident. I loved seeing how a fresh style could completely change someone’s mood and boost their self-esteem. Over time, I realized this wasn’t just a hobby—it was a calling. Doing hair lets me connect with people, express my creativity, and make a difference in how others see themselves. That’s what inspired me to turn this passion into a business.

What should our readers know about your business?
My journey as a hairstylist wasn’t easy—but it was worth every step. I started doing hair out of pure love for the craft. In the beginning, I worked on family and friends, teaching myself different techniques, studying trends, and spending hours practicing. I didn’t have a salon or a fancy setup—I had passion, drive, and a vision.

The challenges were real. Building a client base from scratch, balancing a job or school with my hair appointments, learning how to price my services without undervaluing myself—it all took time and growth. There were moments when I questioned whether I could really make it in this industry. But every time someone sat in my chair and left smiling, I was reminded of why I started.

I overcame the hard days by staying consistent, investing in my skills, and always showing up—even when I didn’t feel like it. I educated myself not just in styling, but in business: branding, customer service, marketing, and financial planning. I learned to treat my talent like the business it is.

Lessons I learned as a hairstylist You don’t have to be perfect to be successful—just passionate and consistent.

What I want the world to know
I’m not just doing hair—I’m building confidence, creating experiences, and helping people feel like their best selves. My brand is about more than styles—it’s about connection, empowerment, and transformation. Every person who sits in my chair is treated like royalty, because they are.

This is just the beginning for me. I’m building something lasting, and I want my journey to inspire others who are chasing a dream—even if they have to start with just a comb, a mirror, and a little bit of faith.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my bestie touches down in Miami, it’s up—vibes only! I’m talking sun, style, and memories that’ll have us laughing for months. Here’s exactly how I’d show them the best time in Miami Beach:

Day 1: Welcome to the 305
• Airport Pick-Up & Café Pit Stop: Grab a Cuban cafecito and pastelito from Las Olas Café—a local gem.
• Check-In + Beach Walk: Drop bags at the hotel or Airbnb and head straight to South Pointe Park for a peaceful beach walk and sunset views.
• Dinner: Kick off the trip with dinner at Prime 112—chic, upscale, and the food? Chef’s kiss.
• Nightcap: Drinks at The Broken Shaker—tropical, lowkey, and perfect for that first night wind down.

Day 2: Beauty + Brunch
• Glow-Up Day: Bestie’s getting a full hair slay in my chair. I’m talking silk press, curls poppin’, edges laid. Let’s get her Miami-ready.
• Brunch: Hit up Nikki Beach—beachfront vibes, bottomless brunch, and beats that make you forget your phone.
• Evening: Light shopping at Lincoln Road Mall, then chill with gelato or smoothies while we people-watch.

Day 3: Tourist Mode, Miami Style
• Sightseeing: Explore Wynwood Walls for murals and photo ops, then swing by Little Havana for cigars, mojitos, and domino games at Maximo Gomez Park.
• Lunch: Authentic bites at Versailles—iconic Cuban cuisine.
• Night Out: Dress up and hit Liv or Story Nightclub—because no Miami trip is complete without one wild night out.

Day 4: Reset & Recenter
• Sleep In + Smoothie Bowls from Under the Mango Tree
• Spa Day: Book a spa treatment at The Standard Spa—saltwater pools, steam rooms, and full luxury.
• Dinner: Grab a chill dinner at Mandolin Aegean Bistro—cute, romantic, and full of Mediterranean flavor.

Day 5: Creative Flow + Content Day
• Photo Shoot: Catch golden hour on Ocean Drive or book a quick session with a local photographer. New hair, new energy.
• Explore Local Markets: Check out a pop-up like The Miami Flea or an art market for local finds.
• Evening Chill: Sunset sail or rooftop drinks at Sugar in Brickell with those skyline views.

Day 6: Island Vibes + Culture
• Morning Beach Picnic: Pack up snacks, music, and a blanket for an early beach picnic at Lummus Park.
• Afternoon Culture: Head to Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) or Frost Museum of Science—something stimulating but chill.
• Dinner + Hookah: Hit up Byblos for dinner, then chill with hookah and music at Mokai or El Patio in Wynwood.

My Miami Musts:
• People: Stylish creatives, bold personalities, and beach baddies living loud.
• Places: Rooftop lounges, oceanfront brunches, and anywhere with good music and better food.
• Vibes: Sun-kissed skin, late-night convos, hair laid, and soul fed.

Day 7: Farewell Feels
• Brunch at The Local House—last mimosa toast, fresh seafood, and views.
• Recap Walk on the Beach: Reminisce on our fav memories, take one last selfie, and maybe a lil tear if we’re feeling sentimental.
• Goodie Bag: I’d send her off with hair goodies, a few local souvenirs, and a playlist to remember our week.
