We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasper, what do you attribute your success to?
Community. I would not be where I am today without the support of my family, friends, clients and mentors.

Being able to rely on my community and knowing they trust and rely on me has been the driving factor for the continuing growth of the business and I hope we can do our part to share this sense of community with everyone we meet and service in Miami.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As much as I’d love to say I’m unique and different, all art is ultimately inspired, whether it be from other art styles, the environment, people, etc. But that’s never a bad thing! I’m so excited to be in a career where I can showcase everything that has influenced me, the sad, the silly… I love experimenting and creating and enjoy giving my clients a way to do the same with their skin. Getting to where I am wasn’t easy and truthfully the biggest hurdle has always been myself but I’ve started slowly learning to be okay with acknowledging and accommodating my needs. This personal growth has in turn led me to try to create an equally accommodating and inclusive experience for everyone I service and work with. I’ve relearned to face everything with curiosity and hope to share that with everyone who comes by our tattoo shop.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll always be the first to suggest a trip to anywhere in the Everglades, but I know it’s not for everyone. A walk through the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens or some fruit farms in the Redlands is always a nice time.

In terms of food, there’s a few small local businesses I would definitely recommend:

Bros Hot: Some of the best hot chicken I’ve had in South Florida
Good chef: A super cute Asian fusion restaurant with great food (the one near FIU is connected to an Asian market)
Bloomte: A small boba shop across the MDC Kendall campus with delicious ramen
Daily bread: A family owned Mediterranean restaurant/marketplace in Pinecrest

Miami is always filled with a bunch of hidden gems so it’s great to explore and discover new places! Oh and of course, passing by the Tatted Ferret Tattoo Studio is never a bad idea!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people I will be forever grateful for, but I would like to shoutout two in particular who have been my mentors and friends since before I even considered starting up my own business.

My first boss and mentor Samm, owner of Squirtin’ Ink in Florida City, saw my potential, took me on as an apprentice and helped nurture my passion and knowledge of tattooing. Her relatability, humor, understanding and love for the art greatly impacted and molded me into the tattoo artist I am today.

My dear friend Mel, an artist at Great Oak Tattoo Studio, was encouraging even when I was just her client at first and her skill continues to inspire me to improve. She’s always been open to giving advice and lending an ear and allowed me to see other perspectives within the tattooing community outside of wherever I was working at the time. Her support has allowed me to make the best decisions for myself, my personal career and my business.
