We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Britto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, what’s your definition for success?
I define success by making sure we achieve the goals we set for ourselves and then setting new ones. And that applies to personal as well as professional success. We at Britto Charette are constantly being inspired by amazing designs and artistic creations that we see in our travels or even in the news. On social media we follow a lot of our preferred galleries that represent most of the artists, artisans, and architects around the world, which really helps us find incredible talent. Being surrounded by and exposed to such talent makes us want to do the same. It creates the desire for us to design and develop something unique–something that would also inspire others or make the end user feel proud to own one of our designs. Success for us is ultimately to create interiors for our clients that reflect their lifestyle and make them so happy that they talk to their friends about us and refer us or come back to us for additional projects/services.

The goal that’s always in the forefront of my mind when I begin designing is that I am going to give clients something they want so bad but they don’t know what it is yet. And when we present our projects to the clients for the first time, we get to see how thrilled they are and the glow in their faces. That gives me the fuel to continue pushing myself to learn and to expand my design abilities.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being creative is something I simply need and want to do every day; it’s essential. And for me, living in Miami is a great advantage because the city is so vibrant and full of energy and it really inspires me. I personally have been shifting from venturing out at night and socializing to now spending that time designing products and revisiting my photo archives–images I’ve taken during decades of international travel.

That creative inspiration spills over into my work at Britto Charette, the company I co-own with David Allan Charette. Art that can speak to you and that has depth rather than something that is more conceptual is what I look for when sourcing art for our firm’s interior design projects. My personal preference is to use photography mixed with sculptural art and soft paint on canvas. We are lucky to be working with many talented artists who share the same creative passion.

My approach to furniture design is a bit different from what most people would guess. I really enjoy designing bespoke pieces that are not mass produced–collectible, special pieces. And I particularly like to design our interiors with pieces that are shown at galleries rather than in furniture showrooms. My approach to design is aligned with Britto Charette. Whatever we design is something that we would use in our interiors. In fact, in most cases we place the pieces in our interiors before they become available to others. I’m really proud to share that our furniture product line is now sold at the Carlyle Collective.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to food in Miami, I would say my all time favorites are KYU in Wynwood and Osaka in Brickel.

I am a big sports enthusiast and I start every day with either Barrys Bootcamp, Studio Three, or Yoga Joint–all of them located in Midtown Miami.

On the weekends I like taking friends that visit to play padel at the Ultra location in Little River. I also enjoy cycling the 14-mile loop at Shark Valley in the Everglades.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s a long list! Our team at Britto Charette is made up of talented and hardworking people who make the job really rewarding. And our clients are absolutely incredible. We’ve been so fortunate to work with people who really love design and who appreciate the kind of detail and customization we bring to each project. I’ve also been lucky to meet so many tradespeople, vendors, and artists who inspire me.
