We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay McCoard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, how does your business help the community?
Comedy provides laughter. In a world that’s so full issues, drama, and life stresses, comedy offers a breath of fresh air through levity. Take a moment to laugh at the bull, while you realize you’re not in it alone. Even allowing one to hear a perspective culturally different from their own, if you’re open enough, you can learn something. Ultimately, it brings people from different places, with different stories, TOGETHER in laughter and relief, for a small moment, you can forget about, or even, laugh at your your problems.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I would say sets me apart from other acts in stand-up is my crowd work. Outside of my material, I bring the crowd in to become part of the show. Because of that, every show is different, and a personal experience between me and each of my audiences. If anything, I can attribute to my current success to consistency. Not only consistently getting on stage, but also being able to deliver while on stage. I wouldn’t consider it easy, it’s more-so natural. I joined the work force at 15 years-old, and I never felt comfortable, or happy in any other job I’ve had before starting stand-up. Even though the “9 to 5’s” provided a steady income, it left me with no other satisfaction. When I began doing what called out to me, I simply became happier, and felt like life itself was less of a grind, although stand-up is ALL grind. Essentially, I learned that if something is worth enough to you, the journey to obtain it can be just as fulfilling. I fell my purpose is to be one of those people, that whether you stumble across me at a show, or just happen to randomly meet me in the street, our interaction, no matter how brief, will leave you with a smile.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am so the wrong person for this question lol. I’m such a homebody, I have no idea what spots are considered “hot” or “in” right now outside of venues, I’ve performed at. With that being said, Thank You Miami in Little Havana is a dope hangout throughout the week. A bar with great food, drinks, and good people on staff that have become friends of mine. My go-to for an out of towner though is Wynwood, there’s so many spots in those 10 or so blocks, from The Wood Tavern, The Butcher Shop, Gramps, and so on, definitely enough things to do to fill out the week and giving a great feel of the Miami night scene outside of the beach. I honestly need to get out more though lol.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to show love to miamicomedy.com, the “virtual comedy club”. Without them, starting out would’ve been much more difficult, being that Miami had such a small scene. Thankfully there’s been significant growth over the last few years, but miamicomedy.com is an absolute staple in the South Miami comedy community.
