We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Nohr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
It’s not simply enough to have a great space to workout in, amazing coaches, great customer service skills, or a hard work ethic…. it’s also having the ability to convince people why they should go to your gym in the first place.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The biggest part of my career background is in customer service. I started in the customer service industry about 20 years ago and have learned a lot since then. I wore many hats in that time frame, from answering phone calls, being a team lead assistant, to a Supervisor and now to a small business owner. Customer service presents unique challenges and that not everyone responds the same way to what is being told or advised. You can explain something the same way to 99 people and that 100th person may just not get it. You learn to treat every interaction with a new person as a genuinely new interaction, not assuming what worked will work now… but with the tools and skill set you have that has made you successful in the past.
During my time in the corporate world working customer service, I knew I was quite where I wanted to be career wise… but remained eager in learning everything I could about customer service, gaining many skills; which many of those skills I still use today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love art and I love food. Naturally Wynwood would be a spot on the itinerary. Easily spend an an entire day eating and checking out all the murals and other unique pieces of art. We’d chill out at Bahama Breeze and have some drinks to end thew night. Another place I really enjoy is Coconut Grove. I love you can walk around there with all the shops and again places to eat. These are just two places we’d go. Miami has many great ‘corners’ and neighborhoods to take someone who is visiting to.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big shout out to the clients who have been with us since the beginning. Since we opened our doors in July 2020, middle of a pandemic. They are our pioneers with many still with us today. Their continued support allows us to create a better training experience for them and for all new members/clients that walk through our door.
