We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Salk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, what principle do you value most?
What value matters to you most and why? Vulnerability. I think a lot of people might think of it in a negative way. I believe being vulnerable is so important as it lets you live authentically and allows you to connect with others easier. Over the years, I had a very difficult time sharing my thoughts and feelings and being vulnerable. But once I did I felt a huge shift in my life. I formed deeper relationships, friendships and my business even started growing too. Being an entrepreneur, I have stepped out of my comfort zone and become very vulnerable and I have seen how rewarding it can be. Now, as a mentor I help other like minded entrepreneurs do the same.
I used my social media platforms to tell my story and it really truly helped me in such a positive way. Yes, it was scary to be so raw and vulnerable when I would share a post, but I offered something to my audience that maybe they weren’t getting. I connected with friends on a much deeper level, many of whom I have never met face to face. I reconnected with old friends, made so many new friends who are inspired and moved and even maybe encouraged to do their own healing because of hearing my personal journey.
I want people to be ok talking about going for therapy and or mental illness.
I believe others trust and respect me for my honesty. Yes, it could be scary, but it’s so worth it.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2017, I decided to take a chance and get involved with a multibillion dollar Company, Nu Skin, after me and my family fell in love with one of their products. Me being me, I knew I had to share it with my friends. In a short time, I quickly had a booming business. I am able to help others look and feel better. And because of the free opportunity, I am able to help likeminded people spend more time with their families, have more flexibility, more freedom, whatever is their “why”.
What sets me apart is my authenticity. I quickly connected with the top people in my team who now are some of my dearest friends. They have helped to mentor me and inspire me to share my own personal “story”. I had been watching others leveraging their social media by sharing their stories. I knew I was ready to tell at least parts of my story. I decided to be vulnerable and do the scary and unknown, but I did so with the support of the people around me. Besides the volume of responses to the posts that I received, the kind of responses I received was unexpected.
I almost immediately knew the impact I could have on friends and strangers alike. I saw a spike in my sales, but was unexpected and what motivated me to keep sharing was how it was making me feel. I knew I was on to something on my mental health journey, the growth of my business and maybe some small ways to the eyes ears or heart of another 12 year old girl who have lost a parent or a 40 year old woman who just lost her husband or anyone who might be struggling. (My own dad died when I was 12).
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to be a tourist in my own area. When friends visit, it is the perfect time to do that. A great day would be walking around Wynwood and the Design District. My favorite restaurant down in Miami Beach is Carbone, so we would definitely go there. Otherwise just shopping at some local boutiques, hanging out at coffee shops, hitting the beach, and supporting some of our favorite local restaurants from Boca to Miami.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person I would like to dedicate this shoutout to and they definitely deserve a lot of credit/recognition in my story is my husband Russ. We are married almost 23 years and together 25 years. He knows me just about as well as I know myself. He is not only my biggest cheerleader, best supporter, but because of his own background he helps me with things I just really had no clue about. Without his support, encouragement and guidance, I might not be where I am today. He is there to celebrate every win and help me through every challenge. I’m lucky to have a partner who is also my best friend and best supporter.
