We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Valdes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was a little girl I’ve always enjoyed art and it’s always been my favorite subject in school. I love drawing, painting, making crafts, etc. However I fell in love with photography when I was in High School, since I would have friends that would let me play around with their cameras and it was just so much fun to me. I knew I needed a DSLR camera the moment I held one. However, I didn’t see photography as a career until I was in my 20’s and had my daughters (I was always photographing them), that I realized I wanted to expand that to photographing other children and families, as well. It’s also a way for me to make my own income while having the opportunity to stay home with them during the first years of their lives, which is the most important thing to me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love photography because it allows me to connect with other people by being able to capture those special moments in their lives, with their families. So for that I’m always excited for. I’ve loved photography since I was really young and always took tons of photos throughout my life but I didn’t actually decide to turn it into a business until I was 24 and had my two daughters. I made the decision because I want to be able to have the ability to work on my own time so that I can still care for my daughters at home. It’s not easy with an infant and a three year old but we make it work and with the job we have the opportunity to meet other families and the kids always love to play together. I’ve learned to be really patient and just trust the process. Never stop learning or believing in yourself, and don’t let your negative thoughts stop you from following your dreams.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Miami I love hanging out at Key Biscayne. Crandon Park is my favorite beach because of how quiet it is and all the nature around it as well. Whenever I have friends in town I always take them to Key Biscayne, Doral to get yummy Venezuelan food or Hialeah to get Cuban food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout-out to my family, specially my husband Adam because he’s always so supportive of my dreams and all of my creative ideas.
