We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeshuaven Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeshuaven, what inspires you?
Although I am inspired by many artists and people in my life that have shaped me to the man I am today, and are resembled through my work, my biggest inspiration is myself. Writing is a very personal matter to me, it’s where I am strongest in my art. I take inspiration from my own life experiences, and I take how I felt during pivotal moments in my past, and interpret that feeling on paper, to where I later translate on a screen. I believe everyone should be inspired by themselves, because there is nothing better than creating from what you know.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At this point in my life, I just try and create as much as I can everyday. I try to do something film related, or art related everyday to keep my mind running and to keep me from becoming comfortable with the idea of not working on something. Feeding the mind daily is essential for artists because the more ideas you come up with, the more you have to fall back on when you feel like you have no source material to help build off of. I still struggle with finding my look, or voice or that “shot” that easily separates me from the rest, but I know that’ll come naturally the more I work. I think the most challenges I face are within myself because I am my biggest critic. I am hardly ever satisfied with something I finish even though I know it’s good, and others tell me it’s good, I’m always hungry to do more and get better and better. With that attitude in mind, I think I stand out from most people. Not saying being satisfied with your work is bad, because it’s one of the greatest feelings ever, but you should always know that there is always room fro important and that you next project will be better than the last.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If friends of mine were to visit, I would no doubt take them to my old college, The New York Film Academy where a lot of my mentors and friends teach. The place is full of life, and super cool and intelligent people. If they hungry, I would suggest some of the nice restaurants around Lincoln rd. But I would for sure take them for some of the best Mexican food on the block, which is Taco Rico. Shout out to them for always being there when I was a broke and hungry college student. Overall, South Beach Miami is a beautiful and vibrant city with some of the most interesting people displayed at every corner. Oh, and the beach of course. Duh. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my family and friends, because of you I was able to chase a dream that most would consider a gamble. Thank you for believing in me still.
