We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Morale and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue a career in music because I fell in love with the feeling performing stage for an audience gave me. I grew up in a Puerto Rican household with an eclectic variety of music always playing around the house. I found myself becoming bewitched by the infectious beats and enchanting lyrics and I began singing all around the house. Growing up I always immersed myself in anything creative, such as choir, drama, and art classes, but especially fell in love with performing in front of an audience. There’s just something so magical about performing your song onstage, and someone comes up to you from the audience and tells you, “Wow, I’ve felt this way too. I really resonated with that song”. Writing is my form of therapy, so it absolutely means the world to me when I can help someone who is going through the same things I am with my music. I want others to feel like they’re not alone when they listen to my music. Being onstage makes me feel like a superhero.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi! My name is Jessica Morale and I’m an Alt-Pop singer/songwriter from South Florida! Growing up in a Puerto Rican household, I was constantly surrounded by an eclectic variety of music and fell in love with singing and performing at a young age. I just recently released my debut album, Phases which is a dark pop coming of age album about the painful experiences that shape us into who we are. The album is seething with sparkling synths and crass honesty in its lyrics which tell the story of the beauty in imperfection. I went through a lot emotionally when creating this album, and I am so proud of the stories I have to tell on this record. As someone who struggles with depression, writing is my form of therapy. I truly hope these songs can help others and remind them that they aren’t alone. I’d say the most challenging part of being an independent artist is being your own writer, brand ambassador, manager, promoter, and producer (Although I had plenty of help from some amazing people on this record). It’s something you always have to strive for and make sure you’re doing something for your art every single day. Developing a disciplined schedule for everything I need to get done helps me when I’m feeling overwhelmed!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a huge weeb, so I’m extremely obsessed with Anime and Japanese culture! I’d start the day taking my friend to a dope Cuban Cafeteria to have some Cafe con Leche. Then, I’d take them to Morikami Japanese Gardens in Boca! It’s filled with beautiful scenery and Japanese Gardens which are extremely aesthetic and peaceful! I would be sure to to take them to the beach sometime during their stay, and I’d probably take them to Respectable Street, which is a dope venue in West Palm Beach that has a lot of awesome musical acts! Hitting up the breweries in Wynwood would be an awesome time as well, and I’d definitely hit up Glitch Bar, which is a really cool video game bar in Fort Lauderdale!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my High School Choir teacher, Mrs. Clark. She always believed in me and challenged me to be the best I could be. Freshman year of High School was a tough time for me, but her choir class made me feel safe and seen. She unfortunately passed a few years ago, but I’ll always remember her and keep a place in my heart for her as I embark on my musical journey.
