We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Talley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, how does your business help the community?
Well-being and Sustainability are SPRING Architecture + Design’s main driving incentives in architecture. With comprehensive, energy-efficient strategies and environmentally-conscious materials, SPRING makes a meaningful impact while reducing carbon footprint. While balancing playful, creative form with serious, thoughtful function, we prioritize sustainability, nature-building connection, and helping the climate. We are ultimately here to support and serve the community, people and their relationship with the built environment.
SPRING is careful on every site to honor the environment. One project in particular we are working with a eco-conscious group of Clients and Builders and we have been thoughtful at every move. We fenced off all the perimeter trees and their drip lines to make sure to keep them safe and unharmed by construction. We have circumvented trees and their roots by building retaining walls around existing plants, instead of taking them down. SPRING reuses and recycles material when possible, for example existing stone on a property for a retaining wall. SPRING is progressive, uses new technologies and encourages clients to build with zero energy. SPRING incorporates renewable resources such as solar and geothermal energy when possible. SPRING builds with consciously green ideas and implement materials and methods in their projects to help provide the community with sustainable, efficient architecture which is both aesthetically stylish and comfortable for the inhabitants because of its high quality of living. SPRING’s clients are happy and pleased, and this in turn creates a more positive and healthy community.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The most important factor behind the success of SPRING Architecture + Design is our dedication to pushing the envelope in architectural design while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability.
Embracing risk has been instrumental in my career. I believe calculated risks are essential for innovation and growth. Whether it’s exploring unconventional design concepts or taking on challenging projects, calculated risks have propelled SPRING forward, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in architecture.
Taking risks is inherent in any creative field. It’s about pushing boundaries, experimenting with new ideas, and being open to unconventional approaches.
Knowing whether to persevere or change direction in business requires a combination of intuition, feedback, and a realistic assessment of the situation. It’s important to differentiate between challenges that can be overcome with persistence and those that require a shift in strategy. Regularly reassessing goals and staying adaptable is key.
Achieving work-life balance is an evolving process. Over time, I’ve learned to delegate effectively and prioritize tasks. It’s about recognizing when to immerse myself in the creative process and when to step back to recharge. Maintaining a healthy balance is crucial for sustained creativity and personal well-being.
I find joy in the process of creating something meaningful and impactful. Seeing our architectural designs come to life and knowing they contribute positively to the world brings a deep sense of satisfaction. Collaboration with talented individuals who share a passion for innovation also brings immense happiness.
Personally, I chose an artistic career because it allows me to blend creativity with functionality. Architecture is a form of artistic expression that directly influences people’s daily lives. The ability to shape spaces and contribute to the built environment is a powerful and fulfilling aspect of this creative career.
Success, for me, is a combination of personal fulfillment, the positive impact of our work, and the growth of SPRING. It’s about leaving a lasting legacy through innovative design, sustainable practices, and contributing to the betterment of communities.
As a parent, the most important thing I’ve done is instill a sense of curiosity and creativity in my children. Encouraging them to explore their interests, follow their instincts, morals and think critically has been key. It’s about fostering a mindset that aligns with the values of SPRING —innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to making a positive impact.
The kindest thing done for me was the unwavering support of mentors and colleagues who believed in my vision for SPRING. Their encouragement and guidance even during challenging times have been invaluable.
I know my path is being an artist and creative, and the bonus is: it makes me happy. The ability to bring imagination to life through architecture is incredibly fulfilling. While the challenges are part of the journey, the joy of creating something meaningful outweighs any uncertainties. I appreciate the freedom and impact that a creative career affords.
I feel lucky to have a creative path professionally, and grateful to have the courage to pursue a business and career in architecture. Architecture appealed to me because it merges artistic expression with practical, real-world impact. The ability to shape the way people experience and interact with spaces was a compelling draw.
My parents fostered my curiosity, provided unwavering support, and encouraged me to pursue my passions. Their ability to instill a strong work ethic and a sense of purpose laid the foundation for my success. My siblings and more recently, extended family, have been supportive and interested in our work as well, and having the family support is meaningful.
I believe everything happens in its own time, and the time is NOW. Starting my creative career when I did allowed me to gather diverse experiences and perspectives that have enriched my approach to architecture. There’s value in the journey, I am grateful for it, revel in it and wouldn’t change the timing of my creative career.
