We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanette Brookes-George, Ph.D.(c) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joanette, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process was rooted in personal experience, evolved through years of community engagement, and fueled by a commitment to a violence-free world. The journey of Unmute Yourself, Inc. began with a personal revelation, a seed planted 25 years ago when I opened up to my mentor about a childhood marred by violence. My mentor initially suggested that I write a book or create a student club around creating awareness on these topics; the idea was daunting. Two decades of entrepreneurial ventures and grassroots initiatives followed before the vibrant spring of 2023 saw Unmute Yourself, Inc. come to life.
The organization symbolizes hope and transformation, breaking the silence on interpersonal violence. Guided by the principles of Awareness, Advocacy, Allyship, Activism, and Awakening, we stand against all forms of interpersonal violence.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Unmute Yourself, Inc. stands out in its unwavering commitment to addressing interpersonal violence, with a distinct focus on sexual violence and a mission centered on creating a safer society, particularly for vulnerable youth. What sets us apart is our survivor-centered, trauma-informed philosophy, emphasizing empowerment through awareness and training programs.
Our journey has been marked by dedication and collaboration with local agencies, law enforcement, medical professionals, and counseling services to ensure a comprehensive response to sexual violence. The challenges were not easy, but overcoming them strengthened our resolve. The lessons learned underscore the importance of resilience, collaboration, and the survivor’s voice in the fight against violence.
I am most proud of our role as a beacon of hope and change in the community, breaking the silence surrounding interpersonal violence. Unmute Yourself, Inc. empowers survivors, raises awareness, and fosters a safe space for healing. Our story is one of innovation, support, and a relentless pursuit of a violence-free world. I want the world to know that our brand is synonymous with empathy, empowerment, and a firm commitment to creating positive change.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In this transformative journey, my deepest gratitude extends to my children, the resilient souls who faced interpersonal challenges with courage. They became my inspiration, showing me that I had set a meaningful example in making them aware, advocates for themselves, allies, and upstanders. Their strength fuels the mission of Unmute Yourself, Inc. Immense credit and recognition are due to the mentor who ignited the spark by suggesting avenues like writing a book or forming a student club, and the others that have consistently encouraged me to write a book. Their guidance planted the seeds of change.
Special appreciation goes to my spouse, a steadfast rock of support, who stood with unwavering strength through every challenge. To my prayer partners, your unyielding encouragement, support, and cheers propelled me forward in this process. This journey is a testament to the collective strength found within the family and spiritual community. Additionally, the community that I currently serve, with its resilience and collaborative spirit, deserves acknowledgment. Unmute Yourself, Inc. is a collective effort, influenced by personal experiences and shaped by the strength and support found within the community.
