We had the good fortune of connecting with jocelyn chemel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi jocelyn, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Recently I have been overwhelmed by the offerings from gurus, self help books , pop psychology and spiritual wisdom.

I started thinking about how all this incoming information diminishes our own internal wisdom. I thought about my own childhood and all the hard times but also the times that I experienced joy and what that did for my soul, my outlook and my resilience.

I thought about what it would be like to ask people in a conversation about the times in their life they felt joy via experiences and connections, to people, places and nature. even people who experienced tough lives and trauma I noticed that when I had these conversations one on one, people would light up as they got in touch with their essence and joy. I did not have to tell them to do more for their spiritual growth etc, Listening to who they are I realized that we all have inner gifts ,strengths and traits that may get buried by feeling not good enough.

By remembering moments of joy we connect to ourselves again. I started doing JOY READINGS as a business last year. After the reading I create a visual mandala with all the symbols we have pulled together out of the conversation that reflects the persons essence. Having the visual mandala is a great way to remember who you are.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am fortunate to have been able to do multiple creative businesses in my life. I have always been an artist. I have taught art to children, art and decorative painting to adults. I have always sold art. I have had a successful European clothing business for 15 years. I would travel to Italy and Paris and buy clothing for private clients. I started making jewelry as an accessory to the clothing and soon a jewelry business was born. I ended my clothing business so that I could become a full time Jewelry designer. I created jewelry for the wholesale market for 10 years. More recently I am a full time artist again. I feel that I am a multidimensional creative and that all these businesses have informed each other. I have always loved design, color, landscape, jewelry and have enjoyed being able to move easily from one to the other. My art has always been informed by what is going on around me in the world and the environment. I grew up in apartheid South Africa. It had a profound effect on my art and what I wanted to convey when I paint. There is a sense of things not being where they should be like barbed wire in the landscape keeping people out. Today I am influenced by the environment, paintings about melting glaciers, mystical landscapes, and post war landscape. I have learned to stay true to my own vision, to be my own voice and love helping people find their unique voice either through teaching or doing JOY READINGS.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would do a beach walk at sun up. or sundown Take my friend to Wokadahatchee wetlands to see the birds and animals. Walk down Atlantic Ave, Delray for coffee and browse through the stores. Love antique stores so we would go to West Palm antique shops. Go to Morakami Japanese Gardens, Mount botanical gardens, Vizcaya mansion, Norton Museum, Miami one day to the Rubell art Museum,Bass Museum down Collins and Ocean and the Miami Design center. Eat at Le Colonial and Akira Back in Delray, Mandolin in Miami, Bunbury in Miami and Jaya at the Setai(love that place)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my two daughters and husband who have been amazing supporters. I feel mentored by all the inspired people in the world who continue to bloom in the midst of adversity
