We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
To be honest, my brand “OUT OF MANY” came to me. I’d always wanted to start a brand. I’d brainstormed endlessly; hours, days, weeks, months, years…. I made a list of ideas that I thought would do well, but I could never decide on a name. One day, when I was about to just give up, the name popped into my head. I’m not sure why, but I went with it. I printed two sample T-shirts, and wore them in public. I got great feedback, and decided to go for it. It’s strange how things work out, but, I guess subconsciously I was always working and the result just took some time to show itself. I’ve never actually put any of the other ideas on shirts. I’ve kept it simple and that’s what works for now. The market spoke, and I listened. I think because it wasn’t conventional, and because I spoke about it for almost 10 years on and off, it seemed like it wouldn’t work. But, here we are, 3 years later, still chugging along, regardless of self doubt, many challenges, and a global pandemic. I think the most important lesson is that if you believe in something, you should never give up.
What should our readers know about your business?
OUT OF MANY was started in 2018. Our brand is easy to identify, simple, and timeless. Seeing people wear the brand is overwhelmingly exciting. The clothing business is tough as it’s driven by wants, instead of needs. There are thousands of people trying to start brands. It’s all about exposure and showing people that they can feel safe and confident in your brand. That’s probably what makes me so proud, we’ve managed to make it three years, and we still have massive potential. There are many challenges in this business, but OUT OF MANY is designed to be streamlined and self-sustaining. Our infrastructure is totally integrated from order to delivery. The pandemic was tough last year, but because of our structure, we survived quite easily. Every order is made on demand, which creates no inventory stockpile issues, and we can grow exponentially.
OUT OF MANY was meant to teach me a lesson about patience and persistence. It took what feels like forever, but a unique brand was born. I think the philosophy is different for each customer, and that’s what’s so interesting. The name tells it’s own story, while maintaining a simple but stylish aesthetic. I personally want people to think for themselves and realize what’s actually important to them, and their happiness. It’s the only thing that matters in the end. We are literally “out of many”, forging a path through life, hoping for the best, propelled by the same simple desire of fulfillment.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Mainly South Beach, Wynwood, Brickell, Gables, Grove, Lincoln Rd. A few great spots to eat – 1-800-Lucky, Coyo Taco, Kyu, Biblos. We would definitely hit up some bars on the beach. Otherwise, I’d simply let nature take it’s course. It’s Miami after all, just go with the flow!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I’d like to shoutout my wife. She’s always been 100% honest with me about everything. If not for her, I would have started many brands, which now in hindsight, wouldn’t of made it very far. In a way, she created OUT OF MANY by putting me through the wringer about forced ideas, and making me think twice.
I’d also like to shoutout my favorite inspirational book “Think & Grow Rich”. It’s very simple to read and understand, but enlightening and fulfilling at the same time. No matter who you are, this book will positively affect your mentality; 100% must read.
