We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Bartlett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

In my relentless pursuit of success, I firmly believe that the most significant driving force behind whatever I have achieved is rooted in my unwavering tenacity and steadfast refusal to accept ‘No’ as a definitive answer. My unyielding determination has been the backbone of this journey. Rather than caving into discouragement or bowing to the pressures of rejection, I have embraced each ‘No’ as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement. I have viewed these moments as invaluable lessons made to propel me further along the path of achievement.

In cultivating this mindset, I have learned to embrace discomfort and uncertainty as catalysts for growth, rather than as deterrents to progress. I know that the greatest achievements are often born from unwavering tenacity.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the realm of writing folklore, my distinctiveness lies in the art of preserving the authentic essence of mythological creatures, ensuring they remain true to their origins, while infusing a modern touch that keeps the narrative fresh and captivating. By striking this delicate balance, I aim to bridge the gap between traditional tales and contemporary storytelling.

Where I am today professionally has been marked by perseverance and dedication. One significant obstacle I’ve encountered is igniting the enthusiasm of younger generations, specifically those within the Zess/Trinibad community for the mesmerizing world of folklore. This has led me on a quest to explore innovative ways to present these enchanting creatures, making them relatable and intriguing specifically for this community. Throughout this journey, I have learned invaluable lessons about adaptability and the importance of embracing change.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Firstly, I don’t consider anyone “my best friend.” If we are close, I would say they’re my brother/sister, etc…lol. But it’s going to be an adventure, a true Trini lime. We’d kick off our day with some doubles, because you cannot visit T&T and not have a doubles!( local delicacy) Then, with a playlist of Soca and Trinibad/Zess serving as the soundtrack, the trip will consist of visiting the most iconic spots that make my homeland one of the best islands.

We’d head to The Temple by The Sea, basking in its serene beauty. Next, we’d take a thrilling drive through Knolly’s Tunnel, where we’d stop to have a little white & sprite. Then, off to San Fernando Hills, where we’d marvel at the breathtaking panoramic views. Of course, we couldn’t miss paying our respects to the grand Hanuman Murti statue, the largest of its kind in the Caribbean—an awe-inspiring monument that stands tall as a symbol of faith and devotion. Afterward, a trip to Toco Lighthouse, perched majestically against the stunning coastal backdrop.

And we must set aside a day to explore the enchanting beauty of Bago (Tobago). We’d venture to its sandy shores, and though I am allergic to shellfish, I’d still enjoy other delightful seafood delicacies. Before they leave, we must visit the countryside of Talparo because there’s always “Something Strange Happening in Talparo.”

This journey would be so much more than just a series of visits to landmarks; it would be a celebration of our camaraderie, an acknowledgment of our shared love for Trinibagonian culture.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I wholeheartedly dedicate this shoutout to my rich and vibrant Trinibagonian culture—a treasure trove of traditions, colors, and flavors that has played an integral role in shaping not only my work but also my identity and resilience. As a proud citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, the influence of our diverse heritage runs deep within my veins, resonating in every aspect of my life.

From the pulsating rhythms of our Soca and calypso music to the hypnotic movements of our traditional dance forms like the limbo and the steelpan, our culture has an enchanting ability to uplift spirits and bring people together. It is in these moments of revelry that I feel a profound sense of belonging, knowing that I am a part of something extraordinary—an amalgamation of cultures that have woven a tapestry of uniqueness unlike any other.

But beyond the festivities, it is the essence of resilience ingrained in our culture that has truly shaped my character. I am immensely grateful to all those who have tirelessly preserved and promoted our unique heritage. The cultural guardians—storytellers, artists, musicians, dancers, and chefs—who passionately share our traditions with the world, ensuring that they are not lost to time, deserve my deepest admiration and appreciation. As I continue on my journey, I carry with me the richness of my people—a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and flavors that fuel my creativity and bolster my resilience.
