We had the good fortune of connecting with John Salak and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I come from Czech Republic which is a small country in the hearth of Europe. I have always been a little bit different then other people around me. Creative, diligent, effective nad workaholic 🙂 I started my own business in 2002 right after high school graduation despite all people around me tried to convince me to go to college. I was never a fan of schools because i like to learn effectively the important knowledge to reach my goals. Great example of what i mean is the language. We speak Czech in my home country or 10 mil. people. And it is the only place in the world where the Czech is spoken. So i think the most important things you should learn in the school are the important languages like English, Spanish etc. And the funny thing is, that i had to learn the English by myself using internet and TV shows 🙂 So then i ensured myself that if i like to get something, i need to go for it by myself. And this attitude accompanied me through my whole carrier and still does 🙂

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Let’s be honest, if you are an artist you still need the business part or you starve to death 🙂 So the art needs to be “adjusted” to what people actually like and need to be successful in your own lifetime. I started to put both of these components together in early 00s by offering webdesign, 3D visualization, photos and videos. The music was just a hobby, because Czech Republic had not that large market for this type of art. But soon even this niche came into picture thats to the internet and i was able to compose music for artists and companies all around the world. Was is easy? No 🙂 All things in the world which matters aren’t free and easy. If like like to achieve your goal, theres always a hard work behind it. But if you are diligent it pays off sooner or later 🙂 It’s simple math, when 10 people decide to do the same business and 9 of them eventually give up and you remain the only one doing this business, all the client become yours 🙂 The key is the consistency, keep doing your thing the best you can and don’t give up! Also diverse the risk. Do more than one type of business. In my case there is the videography, photography, music and sound services and recently also the real estate development (I know it is not the best time for it now, but each “problem” could turn into an opportunity – lower real estate prices). I have learned that if you offer more than just a single service, you are not so vulnerable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ouu 🙂 I am not the right person to ask 🙂 I love what i do for living, it is not just a job, it is the lifestyle for me, so i never really “hang out”. Everywhere i go, i see the inspiration, the buildings, the ocean, nature, cars, people. And my friend a likewise, so each of them has his own “taste” and i would let them come with their own suggestions.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my parents. My parents are also self-employed for their whole life so they helped me understand the way of running my own business. How to build the relationship with the clients, how important is to stand by my word, how to handle set backs etc. They supported me in hard times and they still do 🙂 And i would like to thank them and i hope i am giving something back 🙂
