We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Capalbo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, what do you attribute your success to?
As a songwriter and producer, I’ve learned that the ability to effectively collaborate with my clients has played a significant role in where I am today. Yes, I have a fiery passion for creating music, but mastering the art of collaboration is one of the main factors that differentiates me from most other musicians. It’s a skill that I’ve found to be deeply integrated into every project I do, so I knew there had to be some process to mastering it.
One of the main reasons why I collaborate so effectively is because I acknowledge that if I’m the only one working on the music, then I’m fully accountable for how the product turns out. For that reason, I need to have a very clear idea of how the client envisions the end result of their project.
I start by creating a comfort zone that allows clients to be transparent with their vision, so that we can work together as a team to get the product they need. Once the transparency is established, I make sure to actively listen and map out the emotions that the client wants to convey. This is especially important when working with clients who don’t know the language of music. They may use vague terms in their description, and musicians have to clearly translate that into their projects.
There are a lot of foundational elements to being a great musician, but I truly believe that the art of collaborating effectively is something that every creative should hone.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I specialize in writing and producing custom music for record labels, music publishers, films (feature and indie), TV shows, commercials, podcasts, and any type of visual media that lies in between. My clients include brands, TV networks, filmmakers, digital marketing agencies, and anyone who wants custom music written and produced for a project. My original tracks have been placed with ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, NBC, MTV, E!, Hallmark, Oxygen, Lifetime, Sony, Netflix (Orange Is the New Black), Nickelodeon, ESPN, Fox, The Cooking Channel, NHL Channel, and more.
It took a lot of nos to get to where I am today, but I’ve learned that the combination of passion, hard work, patience, and gratitude have all played a big role in getting here. The moments of satisfaction on my clients’ faces when they see the vision of their projects come to life make it all worth it. I hope that my passion and hard work continue to positively translate into the music I create, and also in the way that I mentor up-and-coming musicians. I love inspiring other musicians, so feel free to connect with me on Instagram @JosephCapalboMusic and follow my music career journey there.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
South Florida has plenty of gems for tourists to explore. The beautiful weather calls for plenty of outdoor activities, such as the beaches and parks. There are a lot of places to check out live music, such as The Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale and Revolution in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Park and Ocean Beachside Eatery (inside of Hugh Taylor Birch State Park) is known for beautiful views and good vibes. For my musician friends, a must-see spot is Penny Lane Music Emporium in Fort Lauderdale, which has the largest selection of ukuleles in all of Florida!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The education and connections from Berklee College of Music made it possible to get to where I am today. I want to specifically acknowledge one of Berklee’s songwriting professors, Jon Aldrich, who introduced me to writing music for film and TV while I was a student at Berklee. I was able to get my first record deal from one of the opportunities that he presented to me. He built up my confidence and provided a clear direction for me to start writing music for visual media.
In addition to my educational mentors, the support from family and friends has undeniably helped make the road smoother.
