We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joshua, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Miami,Fl my background and up bringing has impact me and so many ways being from a multi-culture family. I’ve got to experience both of best worlds it gives you a balance and an understanding of life and people of different ethnicities. which has really help me as a Dj. I can go from playing Hip-Hop to playing Afrobeat, Alternative Rock to Pop and Dancehall, Reggae, Bachata, Salsa, Reggaeton, and so on. makes you appreciate and love all cultures it teaches you as well and make you have respect for it everything.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When it’s time for me to Dj you never know what you’re going to get out of me like my mood really determines where we going to go. Along with the energy of the Venue. That’s what guides me I’m not to big on planning my Dj sets. You can’t plane a moment you can create them.
there are couple of things i’m proud of one thing that I couldn’t get over for a bit was I gotten to work with T-Pain for a while as a Dj and that has open so many doors for me. It lead me to Dj for other artist and tour here and there. Which landed me to work with OVO affiliate TVGUCCI and Reps Up very own Preme And the new dancehall sensation Starr.
I got to where I am now by keeping god first and faith it wasn’t always easy but I trusted the process. on top of that I would be out all night running to different clubs trying to meet a artist and his or her team. build relationships with people I would sit around recording studios all night be somebody assistant/security (earning stripes) lol what ever it took to get my foot in the door. it’s was a struggle first but after a while it got easy.
we all can get to where we want to it’s really up to you and the company you keep. Having a positive mindset and visualize everything you want and the end goal.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
honestly we would be all over miami lol depending on the night we may run through four or more spots lol. savor Wynwood, victory, taboo, story, liv, booby trap. every where lol far as food for me there spot downtown called Manolo & Rene grill one of the best cuban spots. For foods House of wings in overtown Jackson’s soul food, dunknoo or tropical oasis chef creole for Haitian food. now far as fun spots it really depends on what you wanna do it’s miami we have just about everything if not everything.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
