We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Paul and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I wanted to start a business and all I knew was that I wanted to spend my days doing something that I love. Photography has always been a passion of mine and although I was nervous to turn that passion into a full time business, I went for it and I’m so glad that I did!

To be able to capture authentic, real, and raw emotion makes me light up. Through photography, I’m able to capture moments, connection between loved ones, and create lasting memories. I love the creative freedom I have behind the lens.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I went all in with photography! At the time I made the decision, there was no plan B. One of the hardest parts for me was feeling unqualified because I didn’t go to school for business. I knew that I was passionate about photography and capturing precious moments, but running a business?! That felt like too much. With the help of mentors and countless hours spent researching and learning, that fear turned into an obstacle I overcame. If there is one thing I have learned since starting my photography business, it’s that, I can do hard things and it’s okay to ask for help along the way.

My photography style is warm, real, and authentic. Every time I get behind the lens, I want to capture you being YOU. It brings me so much joy when a client lights up after seeing their photos because they love the way they look. I want people to see the beauty in themselves that I see from behind the camera.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are definitely going to the beach, to grab sushi at one of my favorite hole in the wall spots, and Lady Baker in Pembroke Pines is a must because I’m addicted to their Almond Croissant. There are countless Happy Hour spots in Miami so I’d make sure that we swung by a few different places!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Apart from God, I give credit to my family, friends, and mentors for the success of my business. There have been long days, learning curves, and hard seasons working to grow my business, but I’m grateful that I’ve had an amazing support system along the way. Their encouragement and support have always made it easier to keep going. I believe that each of us are stronger in community and I’m beyond blessed for the people in my life.
