We had the good fortune of connecting with Joyce Bartels Daal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joyce, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Aruba, Dutch Caribbean. My parents were from Suriname, lived in the Netherlands and then moved to Aruba. My background is multi cultural and being in a diverse home and environment, this has certainly shaped who I am today. I speak four languages, I am open and identify with different cultures, I am a curious, continuous learner. Growing up in a diverse environment and home has taught me to naturally be open and curious about other people and to be less judgmental and more curious to learn about others. It has also made it easy for me to connect with people from different cultures and to broaden my horizons literally and figuratively. From the Dutch I have learned to be critical, to ask questions, to be frugal! From the islands I have learned to celebrate life, to have a good time, to not let work be the end all to all, to live in harmony with people from all walks of lives and of all colors. From the Suriname culture I have learned to love good food, to speak out for myself, to love music! Being able to speak Dutch, English, Spanish and Papiamento still helps me to make people feel comfortable and important because people love it when you can communicate in their language.
What should our readers know about your business?
For the past 7 years I have reinvented myself, again, and I am practicing real estate on a full time basis. As a matter of fact I now have my own brokerage with a partner and it’s called Ohana Luxury Real Estate. Coaching our agents on the values of bringing kindness into their business will be my responsibility as I am a true believer of kindness and compassion. I bring kindness and understanding to my business which is well accepted by my customers.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to Yellow Green farmers market in Hollywood for all the food and stuff they can buy there. Its such a fun place. I would also take them to the Hard Rock Guitar Hotel because its so unique and there is so much to do ( stores, Casino, restaurants). I would take them to Calle 8 to experience the culture and great Cuban restaurants. I would take them to South Beach and to swim at haulover beach and to eat Russian food at this Deli in Sunny isles. I would take them to Las Olas and also Hollywood Beach. Wynwood and the Miami Design District are also on my list. Wow, this is a full week of fun.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Seven Habits of Highly Effective People from Stephen Covey clicked for me; made me implement and see what really matters to me. Read it in my 30’s and it was a life changers of which I am now reaping the positive results. I used to coach people on this book and it has helped many I coached. My husband of 40 years; he has always and still is my number one supporter and he is all for women in leadership, even though he is a boomer! Irene Saez, former Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe whom I had the honor to meet in person. She used the beauty platform to try to bring political change in her country and she was unapologetic about it and about proving that beauty and brains can go hand in hand. She was a fighter! My parents who always gave me the confidence and support in a quiet, yet strong place. They always stood behind their kids, me. My three adults; they keep me on my toes and they make me so proud.
