We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Chung and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Paris, France and my upbringing in French culture led to a developed perspective on how art can inspire and intermix with all of life’s activities. My childhood spent in this environment has shaped who I am today. I was always interested in shapes and colors of materials around me and I grew up crafting and making things with my hands. In France, there is a constant explosion of new ideas that shape fashion, music, architecture, and all of the little things that you see, hear, and experience walking the city every day. This experience leads to a greater appreciation of the fine skills and techniques that create the artwork you can find all around you. And the admiration and respect everyone has towards the artisans and craftsmen who create such art makes the dedication and passion that goes into making such beautiful everyday things worthwhile. It makes the pursuit one chooses to dedicate her passionate expression to be one that matters.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
This New Year we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary for Jovie Salon. We started many years ago with my dream to bring the same French perspective towards hairdressing, salon professionalism, and individual artistry that I grew up experiencing in Paris. We have three beautiful Jovie Salon locations in the cities of McKinney, Frisco, and Allen and an incredible team of passionate professionals I proudly call my salon family. We are respected for our ongoing pursuit of the best education in our industry with each of our Jovie Salon stylists receiving more than 120 hours of advanced education each and every year. We have also proudly worked more than 60 runway shows for Fashion Week in New York, Miami, and Paris over the recent years and have worked with incredible artists and professionals doing so. It’s never easy to try to build something unique as oftentimes it comes with tremendous risk of failure and many hours of hard work and worry. But if you are lucky enough to discover where your passions lie and you are able to take those steps towards expressing yourself in those passions, the effort is so fulfilling and rewarding. You’re happy in this endeavor and this was the case for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think everyone probably comes to Miami with a list of their top things to do, but if I had just one thing to add to a visiting friend’s itinerary, it would be to enjoy the food! The mix of great Cuban, Spanish, and local flavors in restaurants all around Miami lead to amazing meals and discoveries.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to share my love and thanks to all of the wonderful, wonderful people that work with me in our Jovie Salon family. We work hard together to create a salon environment that supports life-long careers and passion towards our hairdressing craft. This year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary since opening our first Jovie Salon location and I couldn’t be more proud of our incredible team and how our small business is anchored into our local community.
