We had the good fortune of connecting with Justyn Cairo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Even before I knew that I wanted to pursue music professionally, I knew that I wanted to help people around the world. At the age of ten, I thought that might involve some kind of scientific career, but ever since I joined my middle school chorus, I began to appreciate music as an art form that can express and elicit true emotions to heal people in ways imperceivable via other fields of study. Around that same time, my domestic environment was less than ideal, so music became my personal escape. It was at that point when I realized that I had to give back that feeling of comfort and relatability to others going through tough times just like those artists did for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Born and raised on Long Island but with connections to Miami, I create music that is just as diverse as my background. I developed my technique by studying classical vocal repertoire and by listening to contemporary artists, such Young Thug, Pop Smoke, 21 Savage, Future, Chris Brown, and Flo Rida. I pride myself on my versatility, combining modern rap styles with my own musical influences to develop unique sounds. I have melodic rap, drill, trap, old-school rap, and even some grunge songs, so I definitely do not fit the mold of a stereotypical rapper.
I want people to know that it’s not just about the money and the fame for me. Honestly, I just want to help people through my music, so even if I only help one person, I’ll be satisfied. I just want to make the world a better place.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami! I actually lived here when I was young, so despite the fact that most of my childhood was spent on Long Island, Miami holds a special place in my heart. I have some fond memories riding safari bikes at the zoo. The Cuban cuisine is some of the best I’ve ever had. If you’re in Miami and a basketball fan like I am, you have to stop at the arena for a Heat game. Key Biscayne is another great spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather. What’s not to love about this city?
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without my mom’s guidance, I wouldn’t be the man that I am today. Despite everything she’s been through and continues to go through, she does everything she can to support my siblings and I. Her guidance has gotten me through tough times throughout my life, and she continues to be my rock to this day. Whenever I have a question, doubt, or concern, I look to her for advice because I know that she will tell me exactly what I need to hear. With regards to my career path, she always encourages me to pursue my dreams and do what makes me happy. Momma, thank you for inspiring me to be the best I can be.
