We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlin Mazzei and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
There were two main components behind starting my own business. More freedom to create the lifestyle I want to live and a better system to help people get healthy and stay healthy. Before FORMTraining, I was working directly with clients, sitting with them for the hour, and watching them workout. Even though I enjoyed this in the beginning of my career, this wasn’t sustainable. For me or for the client. If I wasn’t working, I wasn’t making money. Even if I became the most expensive personal trainer in the country, there would always be a limit to my success and my schedule would always be dictated by my clients’ schedules.

For my clients, this wasn’t sustainable because they solely relied on me for their workouts, how to structure them, and to make sure they were doing everything properly. If I could do the workout for them, they’d let me. When it comes to weight loss (my primary focus with most clients) the workout is only 10-15% of the equation. There are so many pieces to the puzzle, but we were only focusing on one piece. Within the hour we worked together there wasn’t enough time to talk about sleep, stress, nutrition, or any other factors that have an impact on people seeing results. And if they did reach their goal, they didn’t know how to maintain it, and I’d see them back in the gym with me a couple of months later. In my opinion people needed a holistic approach.

Instead of people paying me to watch them get a good workout out in, now they can invest in the education surrounding their health and learn how to maintain the results they achieve.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
FORMTraining is a women owned health and fitness company that strives to support women in the development of healthy habits, allowing them to feel strong, confident, and in control of their bodies.
We use a holistic approach in our coaching to emotionally, mentally, and physically transform women
as a whole.

We are most proud of our clients who have completely transformed their lives. The women we work with are typically in high demanding careers, have families, and do not have a good relationship with food or themselves. Usually, these things are what most women use as an excuse to not take the steps necessary to becoming a healthier person, but our clients have accepted where they are, taken the risk, and face their fears and doubts every day. We couldn’t be prouder of them.

It certainly hasn’t been easy getting our business to where it is today, but anything worth having is going to be hard work. Plus, the reward of seeing our client’s growth is tremendous. We’ve been able to overcome the challenges through our community and giving back. We’ve learned the best way for us to grow, is to help others to grow too. We created a Facebook Group called Hustle & Muscle where we share all of the information we’ve learned over the years as professional trainers and nutrition coaches. We share recipes, workout ideas, tips for motivation, pain relief videos, free challenges, giveaways, and genuinely aim to help people get started on their health and fitness journey.

We want the world to know that our brand not only represents health and fitness but that we represent the women who never believed in themselves, did it anyway, and are now stepping into their new identity. FORMTraining isn’t about getting women results and then saying goodbye to them. We want them to be surrounded with other women who have gone through the same transformation and strive to live a healthy lifestyle like they do. My partner and I are two women who have been in the same spot as the women who come to us. We know how they feel and can empathize with the current situation they are in. We want them to know that they CAN get from point A to point B and permanently stay there no matter what life throws at them.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami is such a great city to check out and show guests around. One of the main reasons my partner and I moved here was because of the weather! We love the beach, and the clear blue water is breath taking. So multiple stops would have to be to South Beach and Hobie Beach. South beach itself is a party and the beach is very spacious. Hobie beach is a quieter beach, barely any waves, and my favorite part, dog friendly.

After a beach day we’d have to go to Wynwood so we could go to our favorite restaurant, KYU. They serve Asian BBQ style food that is to die for, and the service is excellent. It’s also right next to the Wynwood Walls which is a really cool graffiti park you can walk through. After dinner, it’s time to hit up Gramps! One of the oldest dive bars in Wynwood that plays old school hip hop, reggae, and some techno. You have the option to stay inside and hang by the bar or dance outside under the tropical trees and flashing lights.

In my opinion you shouldn’t go to Miami without renting a boat, so boat day is next on the list! You get to experience Miami in such a fun way by doing this and if you get the right captain, he’ll take you to all the cool spots like Star Island. There are so many little islands where you can get off and swim or you can just cruise around listen to music and enjoy the scenery.

Enjoying the water is top priority on my list so on top of beach days and boat rides, we’d have to find a kayaking and paddle board place. There are tons of spots around the city and since we prefer the calmer water, we’d look at the ones located around the bay. The calm water is perfect for paddle boarding and sometimes we’ve been lucky enough to see manatees!

After all this time on the water I know we’d need to refuel. One of my favorite neighborhoods to go out to eat in is Coconut Grove. It’s great for all occasions where you can just grab a quick bite at a pizza spot, or you can sit down and be wined and dined at some of the upscale places in the area like Ariete. We live very close to Coconut Grove so we would definitely enjoy the walk to dinner so we can experience the quiet, lush neighborhood that surrounds the downtown area.

I could on about how many cool restaurants, neighborhoods, and activities there are to do in this city, but this would be much longer than it should be. If you haven’t been here yet, it’s time to pack your bags and get the vacation of a liftetime.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is not one person, group, or course that I can dedicate my successes to. There have been so many people, places, jobs, experiences, cities, and books I could give recognition to. But if anyone deserves credit to my success it is my parents for always supporting and encouraging me throughout this journey. They have both supported me emotionally and financially and I would not be where I am today without them. I truly cannot put into words my gratitude for them.
