We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
The idea of Work/Life Balance has constantly changed for me throughout the last five or so years in business, with the most dramatic shift happening this year after the birth of my first baby! For the first three years, I was constantly in a state of “hustle” thinking that “one day” I won’t have to anymore. That day definitely never comes! Over the last year, I tried to make the “life” part of work-life balance a bigger priority – despite an equally full inbox and a to-do list that never ends. It hasn’t been easy and sometimes I have to “force myself” to leave work during work hours, but it’s a work in progress. With that said, ever since my son was born two months ago, it has been a LOT easier!
What should our readers know about your business?
I started my entrepreneur journey in 2017, with a blog about destination weddings! The blog became popular, and I jumped right in to a new career in destination wedding planning! Needless to say, when COVID happened, I needed to make a quick pivot. I quickly looked at what skills I had that I could use to make money (which led me to marketing – which was one of my strengths in my wedding planning business) and what skills people were willing to pay me for (which had me focusing on Pinterest marketing and Blogging!). My biggest piece of advice: when you don’t give yourself the luxury of time, you make decisions faster. If I had first decided to start a marketing business (and didn’t have the stress of a pandemic shutting down my main source of income), I would have likely debated and “planned” my business for years. Instead, I jumped in and tried things. Two years later, I’ve added more of the services I love to offer and discontinued the ones that I don’t!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ohhh great question! I live in Edmonton, Canada which is kind of a “working” city. People come here for work, but we aren’t exactly a tourist attraction. That being said, we have great locally-owned restaurants and I would probably plan most of our time around eating haha! We could scroll down Whyte Ave which is filled with a lot of “small business” retail stores and we could fill our days with visits to nearby lakes (I love the water!).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I absolutely love Laura from Laura Milroy Media. I am an enneagram 3 and she is an enneagram 7 and she is the business bestie everyone needs to remind them life is supposed to be fun!
