We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Muirhead and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think a healthy dose of educated risk is important. If we are not willing to take risks, then how can we grow and evolve? There are times that we also just have to follow our gut and trust our instincts. We will not always be right, but we can always say that we tried our best. It takes courage to put yourself out there. With great courage comes great rewards. Opening Honeybee was a risk. However I knew with my creativity, business sense and proven research, that I was making the right decision. Is it hard? Sometimes. But I would do it all over again if I had to. IN A HEARTBEAT. Nothing is more satisfying than doing what you love.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My creativity and my love for baking was the driving force in creating Honeybee. A brand that is locally recognized. I would say that our brand not only has a beautiful product, but it is also delicious and we are mindful of using the best ingredients we can find. We are always evolving and working on growing. Everything we do, we do with love and care. We love our community and strive to create a product that people truly enjoy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many great places in this amazing city! Miami has evolved so much – specially our culinary scene. I would definitely say visit Calle Ocho for a real MIAMI experience. Visit our beautiful beaches. Too many beautiful things to name!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My love for baking comes from my Italian grandmother who taught me from a young age to make pasta, bread and cakes from scratch. I will always cherish those moments with her. Locally, I would have to say Leticia Ramos, owner and cofounder of Panther Coffee. Why? Leticia gave us our first opportunity when we were relatively new because she believed in me and in the quality of our product. I will always be grateful for the opportunity. I consider her a role model because not only does she run a successful business, but she manages to always evolve and stay relevant alongside her husband Joel. Even with all of the success, she is still incredibly down to earth. She also empowers female business owners, which I have profound respect. I will always consider her a role model.
