We had the good fortune of connecting with Karl Wiegandt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karl, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
The most important habit that has led The Berry Farm to its current success began with several good habits. The first relates to surrounding yourself with people who motivate, inspire, and push you to greater heights. Never to be underestimated, is the power of relationship-building, especially during trying times. The next few habits collectively shaping The Berry Farm space today, were hard-work, consistency, sticking to our plan and our vision, and calculated risk. On the long and difficult days, where it’s harder to wake up in the morning, expecting the natural obstacles to arise and pivoting as needed, were instrumental in shaping The Berry Farm’s current landscape.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are most proud of the future at The Berry Farm. We are always striving to add, create, and enhance the experience at the Farm. The challenges in creating and constantly looking to enhance the Farm experiences are always challenging. Safety being our biggest priority — We spend hours reviewing protocols to ensure the Farm is a safe space. Each new vision, whether simple or difficult, always presents obstacles; whether it be from building the space, getting approvals from municipalities, promoting, and making the public aware of the additions, or day-to-day operations. Even down to simple logistics, they all present their own specific challenges. The one major lesson I have learned on this journey is to surround myself with people who have a large vision and support your direction and path. The people encouraging you and are genuinely happy and excited for your vision, are one of the most important factors of building a brand story, I have learned.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Of course, the sunflower fields at The Berry Farm are a highlight of the South Florida community. When in season, the strawberry fields are another must-do activity.
Pack an umbrella and two chairs for an end-of-the-day swim at Key Biscayne Lighthouse beach.
Miracle Mile in Coral Gables can’t be overlooked, with a drink and tasty meal at Hillstones.
Joe Stone Crab — Starting October 15 for the famous stone crab claw, is a highlight of the city for our winter months.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
From our social media team, to our operations directors, managers, cashiers, cooks, and landscape crew; to the countless hours we all spend prepping for a day of work at The Berry Farm. It is a total team effort with no one person being a greater component than the other. Every member of The Berry Farm team makes it the unique destination it has become.
