We had the good fortune of connecting with karol olivero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi karol, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I love this questions because our entire business is made under the idea that falling into the right habits can help you succeed both professionally and personally. For me, after I turned 24 years old I decided to switch most of my habits to better ones.
I started waking up early morning, today I’m out of bed at 6:30 am, this has helped me take advantage of my entire day! It gives me more time to focus on self-care, to prep for my work day and to cross my to-do list to ensure my weekends are free for me to enjoy with friends and family. I let myself rest on Sundays, and sleep in until my body is ready to get out of bed.
I decided to place more focus on my body, shifting the way I used to workout to one that has focus on recovery workouts. I now do Yoga & Pilates to make sure im building strength and stretching my body constantly. This has helped me perform better at work and has allowed me to discover a new side of a healthier lifestyle that I did not embrace much before. Additionally, it has given me access to a powerful and beautiful community of people that enjoy self-care as much as I do.
To follow up on this habit, one other that helps me perform better is having a balanced diet. I have become obsessed with my morning rituals, stretching & drinking green juice first thing in the morning is the one thing that gives me an early boost. Learning to care for your gut should be one of your most important habits, when your gut feels good, so does your mood! When your mood is good, you perform better. It’s all about balance.
Another habit that has helped me succeed is learning to balance my workload and free-time, is important to grow professionally and to give your best to every project you decide to carry, but its also important to learn when to give yourself a break, to breathe and get centered. This will help you understand better where you currently stand and where you actually want to move on to.
Last, one of the most challenging yet most rewarding habits that have helped succeed has been learning to listen. I used to had a hard time receiving and acknowledging people’s feedback or opinions when it came to projects of my own. Today, I realize that the more perspectives or opinions I could get on an idea, will help me perform better. Listening to people you trust or admire, processing what they have to say and bringing their brainstorming session into yours will actually help you perform better and make better choices.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the founder of Habits Skin Lab, a holistic beauty studio located in “Calle Ocho” Little Havana. We specialize on facial massages such as gua sha, face cupping and buccal massage. We recently became a one-stop self-care studio, by introducing our new area of nails, brows & lashes (located next door!) with non-toxic and clean beauty options available too!
I am proud of building a business that focuses on clients, self-care and result-driven services. We only promote services we truly believe in and trust. Each person inside our team practices every day to make sure they are giving the best service out there, to keep learning every day, and to stay passionate about their field.
Building a self-care business in such a fast-paced growing city has been challenging because we are constantly in need of staying up to date with the latest treatments out there. In a city where cosmetic procedures are the way to go, it has been challenging to market a holistic alternative that will educate people on how to continue to treat their skin at home without having to go to get cosmetic procedures at such a young age or with so much frequency. Our approach, allows people to learn more about how to care for their skin, how to naturally lift the skin, how to age gracefully and how to de-stress from their daily activities.
We have been training hard to bring to Miami a few techniques that are popular in both NY and California, as we have seen an increase in people moving from those states post-covid. We now offer techniques that are new in Florida and help us disrupt the market when it comes to self-care.
One of the lessons I have learned the hard way is that building a good team is the key for you to succeed in your business. Hiring the right people matters, placing importance into passion & desire of growth is more important than looking at their resume. Its easy to teach someone skills and techniques, but it’s not easy to teach them to care for their clients, care for their work and go the extra mile, that is something you can’t teach. Don’t settle for someone who might benefit you in paper, trust the person that is asking you for a chance and is willing to do anything to learn how to perform best within your business, this person will give you their 100%.
We have had so much luck along the way, I’m happy to say that our team’s hard efforts have paid off as we currently are one of the most visited spas in Miami.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Love this question! I’m a Little Havana girl, I love everything about this neighborhood and have been enjoying watching it growth!
A few of the places I love to go to eat are Lung Yai Thai Tapas, best Thai food in the area (if not Miami!) I like going to Casa Florida for drinks and girls night out, its cute, cozy and friendly.
One of my favorite places to get pampered (aside from Habits of course!) is Ninette Hair Studio. They give the best scalp massages and hair care, plus they have non-toxic and clean beauty products, the team is great and it ends up being such a treat just being there.
Outside of Little Havana, I like going to Mimi Yoga Studio in Wynwood, hot yoga is one of my favorite weekly workouts.
I’m obsessed with Italian food and recently learned that one of our clients owns a beautiful restaurant called Osteria in Biscayne and I’m obsessed, its delicious and has such a good atmosphere!
I’m all about good food, good wine and good company 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to Andrea Garcia, our Lead Esthetician at Habits Skin Lab. She has been a true supporter of our business and my personal success since the beginning. Whenever I turn around, she is right there supporting me, showing up everyday no matter how hard it gets.
She was there for me when we barely had clients at the beginning. She has seen me in my lows and has had words of encouragement to help me get back up, she has also seen me on my highs and has had words of acknowledgement but also has put focused on keeping me grounded. She has put up with all my stress and not-so-good mood on our most challenging days and somehow still finds a way to laugh about it, help me remember that life is too short to focus on the bad feelings, and help me move forward. Overall, she always goes the extra mile.
She is part of my story because without her, I would have not been able to grow our business as much as it did over this past year. She is part of my success in all senses, so she truly deserves this shoutout!
