We had the good fortune of connecting with Karyn Paige and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karyn, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote is: “Everything always works out for me in the end. If it hasn’t worked out yet, then it isn’t the end.” When it comes to being self-employed, things don’t always work out the way you think they will. There are ups and downs, feasts and famines, roadblocks and pivots. I like to believe that as long as I have a vision of how who I want to be in my life and business, I can be open to the different possibilities of how I actually get there. So far, that’s worked out for me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m a Certified Informed Practitioner of Human Design, a mindset coach, facilitator and speaker. My work approaches personal and professional development from a place of anti-oppression, centering the intersectional experiences of Women of Color. My life as an entrepreneur has evolved from working as a nightclub singer to freelancing as a WordPress developer, to mentoring women in business and now helping women find alignment through energy work and self-compassion. It’s because of my own long and winding road that I find myself uniquely qualified to help others find clarity at their own crossroads.

It wasn’t easy to get where I am today. Many of my obstacles have become my biggest teachers. I’m partially blind, and I don’t drive or live in a Metro area with frequent public transportation and ridesharing. So I had to figure out creative ways to gain traction and visibility in my coaching business beyond constant networking, coffee chats and lunch dates. It’s taken time and patience to get here. I wasn’t always a patient person.

I also lead with my values, which clash with a lot of the values of late-stage capitalism and other oppressive systems. I’ve never agreed with grind-culture ideals like quantity over quality, competition over collaboration, gatekeeping and extracting as much as you can as fast as you can. When you go against those norms, building a business can feel like it takes forever. It can be tempting to compromise your values to get quick wins and fast money, but I’m here for sustainable success instead.

In my current area of expertise, Human Design, it’s hard to find diversity among practitioners. I made the decision early on to be incredibly vocal about centering the experiences of Women of Color in my practice. As it turns out, there’s a whole community of Women of Color who want to learn more about Human Design specifically from someone who shares their lived experiences. I’m grateful when they find me. The lesson here is to be brave enough to focus on the underserved and underrepresented, especially when you are in that category, too. Society may reward entrepreneurs with “universal appeal,” but there’s more than one way to be successful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s hard to pick just one person to shout out. My mom and my husband are both my biggest supporters. I want to shout out my Human Design mentor, Aycee Brown, as well as Alesia Galati for connecting me with y’all.
