We had the good fortune of connecting with Katerina Wagner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katerina, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve worked in the media/communications industry for 25+ years after graduating from the University of Miami in 1996 with a Bachelor’s in Mass Communications. In 2009, I launched Miami Art Scene™ and began heavily promoting visual artists, galleries, art museums and events with an emphasis on local artists and the overall art scene that had evolved in South Florida during the transformation in Wynwood and with Art Basel Miami Beach coming here in 2002. Things were really starting to take shape in Miami back then and it was an exciting time to launch an art/media start-up. I saw the need for professional, niche advertising, marketing and public relations services, and the idea was formed through identifying the supply and demand aspect within the marketplace.

What should our readers know about your business?
Miami Art Scene™ is Miami’s #1 art magazine, an influential visual arts platform covering local, national and international art news and information. We’re able to cast a wide net, generating exposure and visibility through reaching a vast audience spanning the entire creative landscape — including collectors, dealers, artists, galleries, museum directors, curators, designers, art aficionados, connoisseurs, art-goers and more. Reporting on the local art scene, U.S. markets, and the global art community, featuring personalities, artwork, trends, exhibits, and events in a concise, well-crafted style. I launched the platform in 2009 and began heavily promoting visual artists, galleries, museums and events with an emphasis on local artists and the overall art scene that had evolved during the transformation in Wynwood and with Art Basel Miami Beach coming here in 2002. Since then, we’ve been evolving in real time with the rapid growth and change around us, continuing to keep our clients at the forefront of business, enterprise, communication and culture within a global, digital framework. I’m fortunate to have an amazing support system of contacts, friends, colleagues, and we are all able to work stronger together and combine resources, contacts and opportunities to strengthen the outcome(s) for all involved, it takes a village. Also working in the communications industry for 25+ years has given me the ability to blend the older, traditional methodologies and strategies with the newer, more advanced vehicles of reaching audiences; working in this double capacity also allows for stronger, sustainable outcomes.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like taking people out on Miami Beach to enjoy the art deco architecture, the cafes, shops and restaurants along ocean drive, collins avenue, SoFi, etc, and exploring cool areas in Wynwood and the Miami Design District. If I had a bestie with me for the day, we’d start the day with a cappuccino and pastry at Panther Coffee in Wynwood and walk around enjoying the galleries and shops, we’d head over to Mia Market for lunch, a chef-driven food hall in the design district with a curated selection of local culinary delights where we would share a few bites and walk around, I love the swing chairs outside the market known as ‘Netscape’, a 24-seat web of hanging chairs by celebrated German designer Konstanin Grcic. Then we’d cool off at Aubi & Ramsa 21+ Ice Cream, and definitely I would make dinner reservations at CVI.CHE 105, my favorite ceviche place located in downtown Miami.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a huge shoutout to all the Miami artists, the galleries, museums, art professionals and creative businesses in South Florida, they’re the real magic that allows for an industry to flourish where we can all thrive, so everyone involved in the business here deserves credit and recognition. It’s a blessing that I get to work with and develop long-lasting relationships with creative and talented people in South Florida, across the United States and all over the world while doing something I love and am passionate about.
