We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Marie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine Marie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk has been a pretty big factor in my career lately. I can admit that being a self-taught baker has had its difficult moments. I can get inquiries for themes I have never done before or flavors I’ve never experimented with. Now some may freak out (which I do) because it’s an unknown territory but I don’t mind the challenge. You often hear “with great risk often comes great reward” and I agree with this 100%. It’s true sometimes I don’t always get it right the first try or even the second, but without taking the risk how will I ever learn.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self-taught baker and business owner. I’ve always had a passion for baking whether it was making cupcakes for friends in high school or making brownies for my family. It was always just a hobby for me until the beginning of the 2021 year. I felt like I wanted to do more of what I enjoy so I thought why not just try it out as a business and see where it takes me. At times its not easy because I still work a separate full time job throughout the week and carry a busy schedule but seeing everyone’s reactions and seeing the final product really makes it all worth it. I honestly get giddy after each order because I can’t even believe that I actually created that. One thing I struggled with the most during this process was balancing. I would try to take in as many orders as I could and then spend countless nights without sleep or would miss out on time with family. With time I’ve learned to balance things better by learning to limit my intake and remind myself that I’m only one person and let me tell you it really helps. I really put all of my heart into every order I create. This is what I live for, to make people happy and if sweets is the way then I am all for it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The options are endless living in South Florida! I am a big sucker for some good tacos and I love animals. So I would say our activities for the week would consist of Zoo Miami, the beach, farmers markets (Yellow Green Farmers Market or Sunnyside Up Market), axe throwing, kayaking, Wynwood Walls, south beach food tours or catching a show at the Dania Improv. If we can escape South Florida, definitely take a trip to Disney World (my heaven on earth). I am a big foodie so this list could go on forever but I’ll keep it short. Places for tasty foods and drinks would be Council Oaks, Bol Hollywood, Taco Beach Shack, Coyo Taco, Sistrunk Market, Fat Tap Beer Bar, Batch, Shooters, American Social, Lona Cocina and Firebirds. Some fun experiences to check out would be the Wynwood night life, Barton G the restaurant, Lips Show, jet skiing and speedboat tours.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my wonderful husband and family! They have been the best support system since I started this journey. They have been my taste testers, late night decorators, delivery drivers, marketers and anything else that comes along. You guys are the my world and I am forever grateful to you all! I also want to shout out my customers because without them I wouldn’t be able to express my creativity. Thank you all for putting your trust in me and for having me be a part of your special day.
