We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of our brand is that we know what separates us in the interior design industry. We have developed a unique approach to design. We call it Biographical Design. It is a signature design process wherein we discover key points along a persons biography and then create a room that is a reflection of that. Having done it for over 100 clients, we’ve seen incredible results that go deeper than the rooms just being beautiful and functional.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are the founders of Biographical Design. It is a signature design system that takes a persons biography and turns it in to the homeowners unique personal style. Doing this allows for the home to be an extension of the persons self expression. Self expression is the root of fascination. We have been developing this over a decade of practice with over 100 completed projects in Miami and abroad.
Getting here wasn’t easy – it required a lot of dedicated and intentional efforts but the journey has been rewarding. I became a mom five years in to business and it changed everything. It gave me incredible insight in to how much more intentional I wanted to be with my efforts. It gave greater depth to everything I did. Because my husband is my business partner, I had unique support. It’s a continual education in prioritization and time management which allows my company to run like a tight ship.

Having had the pleasure of working with global brand owners, influential leaders, actors, and the like, our inspiration comes from the amazing biographies of the clients we work with. Having a deeply rooted connection to our clients allows us to design spaces for them that are uniquely excellent. This dedication to personalized excellence is the key to our success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the design district and walk the streets to get inspired by great design. I would take them out to lunch at Swan and sit outside to enjoy the weather. Then, we’d walk around Wynwood walls to appreciate budding artists.

I would take them on a bike ride in Shark Valley – a 16 mile bike path in the middle of the everglades that lets you enjoy nature in raw form.

I would spend a day at the beach. We’d bring a picnic and an umbrella and sit for hours talking laughing and enjoying the salty air.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people to thank. As a kid, my parents always believed in me and encouraged me to go after what I wanted. They illuminated my path. My mentor and business coach that fuels me today is Michelle Villalobos whom I have been working with for over five years. She keeps me in alignment and motivated to be at my best.
My drive and motivation comes from my son and my husband for whom I do everything.
