We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Oxman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what is the most important factor behind your success?
re-defining success to mean what success looks like to ME. Not what others might deem successful. Being an actor and creative means something different to everyone, but most people define ‘broadway’ ‘movies’ ‘famous’ as a success. Thats a hard goal to live your by when in reality we have almost no control over achieving those things. and that’s not really the goal. my real goal is to be active in the world I love, recognized by my peers, and performing somewhere as often as I can even if thats just online. When I refocused what I do on what I can control, and let go of ‘booking’ as being the only path to success, new opportunities found me, just by putting myself out there and being open.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The thing I am the most proud of in my life is my creativity. I no longer limit myself to just one outlet for it- and the more I tackle the more I realize how being an artist is so much more than just one thing. I love looking at the marketing and out reach side of things, accessing people who don’t have access. I love looking at things in new creative ways (how would *I* talk abut that or share that or communicate that). I love bringing a unique style – both literally and figuratively- to things.
When I started out, I thought that I had to be a type, a perfect molded human, and if I did everything right, I’d be a success. If I was thin enough and pretty enough and showed up every day, I’d book the role, I’d get the gig. and I learned the hard way that that is not true. THE ONLY THING YOU CAN BE IS ENTIRELY YOURSELF, AND NO ONE ELSE CAN BE THAT. And while I’m not the only person to say or realize that, it’s also easier said than done. Every piece of me I’ve slowly embraced has made me happier, and in a funny way, somehow, more successful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have favorite spots everywhere. I’m a connoisseur of favorite things. the answer is usually; local, small shop, fun and unique places.
If you’re coming to NYC, thats overwhelming because there is SO MUCH OF THAT HERE! So I’ll start at the beginning, you gotta see a show. If you’ve never seen a Broadway show, start there for the experience, Now tickets are expensive, so heres my itinerary from when I was in school and could only visit for a day at a time—
In the morning, grab a fun coffee and a bagel. Try Culture Espresso ( grab a cookie for later), Bibble & Sip, Bird & Branch or Ground Central. Then pick 5 shows you want to see- know where the theatres are (they are all within walking distance, although some walks are long). With fuel in hand start with your number one pick and when the boxes open (apx 10:30am) go to the box office or wait in line and ask if they have rush, student rush, obstructed view, or something available in x price range. Most of the time the best deal is available in person at the theatre, and I thinks its a real RUSH to let the tickets decide what you’ll see, going around and stepping in the theatres, the thrill of finally getting your tickets- and then the day is yours! From there, visit the Museum of Broadway, the Drama Book Shop, walk up to Central Park, or take the train down to the east or west village and browse the streets. I love McNally Jackson books, Funny Face Bakery, Sweet Pickle Books, Bon Bon Candy, Swingers mini golf, Tea & Sympathy and Spicy Moon. Before the show, come back to midtown, and grab food or drinks at P.S. Kitchen, The Algonquin, B Side Pizza Bar, Lady Blue or LumLum Thai. Then ENJOY THE SHOW, after if you cant wait to talk more about your experience, grab a post show drink at the Rum House.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All my very talented friends in creative industries. There’s too many to list, but in creative business (and a lot of life) its all about who you know. and the best way to answer that question is by working with, embracing, celebrating and helping your friends in the same boat. a rising tide lifts all ships- and most of the opportunities I have had in this career have been because I helped a friend make something happen and then got to ride with them into the success. When you meet or find someone who’s talent and work ethic you admire, support them, help them, be there, and then see where you can go together.
