We had the good fortune of connecting with Katlyn Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katlyn, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from San Diego, California, but I have called Panama City, Florida my home for over 25 years. While I have always had a wide variety of skills and jobs throughout my life so far, nothing has made me as happy as the title of author. I do believe everything I’ve learned up until being an author has helped mold me to handle this new title. My upbringing will forever hold a special place in my heart, as I had two of the most amazing grandparents along side me helping through it all. They helped mold me into the woman that I am today. They raised me to love fully, enjoy life and to never be afraid to chase your dreams no matter how scary they are! They will forever be in my heart. It is my mission as an author and young lady, that I too will leave footprints on as many peoples hearts as they did.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I feel sets me apart from other authors is…..although I got started in a historical non-fiction genre, I can branch out and write in more than one genre. I am the type who can write about anything. I just need the passion behind it. I am extremely proud of this moment of being called an internationally published author with Arcadia Publishing/The History Press Haunted America Series. I am most excited to see where this journey continues as I have a multitude of ideas. I am only getting started on this journey and I can’t wait! This writing a book journey was never easy, just ask my bestie, Nicole Beauchamp! Having a good support system to fall back on when you feel like you can’t do it or are flat out struggling. Believing in yourself is a huge step. See the vision and envision it happening! Claim that moment of excitement and I promise you will win every time! The lessons I learned along the way is, know that when someone tries to step in front of your success…don’t allow all that negativity from stopping you. If your success is meant for you, it will happen, but you have to believe in yourself. I want people to know that you could one day be just like me. If you feel like you are struggling to get started or just want to talk about wanting to one day be an author, I’d encourage you to reach out to me on socials! I’d love to hear from you! Everyone has a story just waiting to be told, what’s yours?!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The ultimate vacation spot for a week would be at Wakulla Springs State Park. The Wakulla Springs Lodge, has the best food for all meals of the day and evening, including delicious desserts! The gift shop has the world’s longest marble bar where you can sit and enjoy an ice cream, snack foods or even tasty candy. This Mediterranean type lodge features unique hand painted designs on the wooden ceiling. This vintage type lodge is one of a kind as it also has the original manual elevator still in operation today. Each room here has its own unique layout and setup with furniture from the time of the war. Music floods the lodge bringing in a type of calming energy from the roaring 20’s. The most exciting part about Wakulla is the spring itself as it is the biggest spring in all of Florida. There is a designated swimming area where you can also jump from a two story platform into the water and still not be able to touch the bottom! If swimming isn’t your thing, have no fear! You can still catch glimpses of this magnificent spring by taking a boat tour. It’s roughly forty-five minutes and the details of history here are about as unique as the lodge itself. After a long day of swimming and sightseeing of the property, I highly suggest a game of chess or checkers in the lobby next to “old Joe”. Early mornings are best for the paranormal investigations of this haunted lodge. Have no fear, kindly spirits of the previous owners reside there. There is so much more to Wakulla County, FL to discover, but I’d highly suggest looking into discovering what the Florida Panhandle has to hold as there is much history and paranormal hauntings.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh wow, first off I’d like to shout out my best friend and favorite author, Nicole Beauchamp! Her love, support, mentorship and encouragement through all of this journey has been something I feel I can never say thank you enough for. I feel extremely blessed. Here is a little backstory. Nic, tried for four years to get to me write my ideas of a book to Arcadia Publishing and The History Press. She believed in me when I failed to see the success in myself. I finally after four years decided to go for it and I don’t regret it at all. Nic was with me every step of the way! Nic is an author herself with Arcadia Publishing/The History Press. She has three books out right now…Haunted Bay City, Haunted Detroit, Haunted Bars and Pubs of Michigan. I would also like to thank my publisher for the opportunity to have made this dream a reality for me. I’d like to thank my late grandparents for always believing in my passion of writing since it began when I was a child. Big thanks to anyone who told their story or helped contribute to my book. I’d also like to thank my family, friends, co-workers, my former college professor Patti Woodham, and all of my new fans!! You each are so awesome! Your support means the world to me!
