Meet Keicon Cherry | Gospel Recording artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Keicon Cherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keicon, what are you inspired by?
Im inspired by my family. They are the gas that keeps my car running. Everything I do I do with them in mind. I was raised by a single parent until she married my stepdad and I was able to see my mom and stepdad work their way up from public assistance all the way to millionaire status. They put me through college, undergrad, and grad school so I feel like their investment forces me to be the best that i can be.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ive been singing my entire life. From the age of 3 walking to the front of the church in SE Washington DC grabbing the mic and singing “God is a good God” to singing the national anthem for the LA Clippers. I owe all of my career success to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ive been blessed my whole life to simply be in the right place at the right time. My mind goes back to days in my hometown Charlottesville VA where i was blessed to be a student at the Music Resource Center. A recording/dance studio that instilled the importance of music at an early age. There I was blessed to be in Entertainment weekly with the Dave Matthews Band. That experience would give me the confidence to go and audition for Season 3 of BET Sundays best where I got to be in the midst of some of the world’s greatest singers. Though at the time I didn’t make the top 10 they still aired my audition and to this day people still will say oh “he was on Sunday Best” Since then I’ve been blessed to be on America’s Got Talent with the Virginia State University Gospel Chorale and tour internationally. Though things somewhat fell in my lap I’ve had to overcome lots of challenges the biggest one being accepting that my voice and story are enough. Some lessons that I’ve learned is to always make sure the business is handled upfront that way you wont find yourself being screwed in the end,

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So being that I live in Los Angeles California whenever people come to visit I love to take them on what I call the LA in a week tour. So day one I’m taking my guest to Hollywood Blvd. While there were going to hit up my spot Secrets where they have the cheapest food in Hollywood. Next were going to drive down to West Hollywood to see the thriving area of bars and nightlife. If we get hungry we will most likely hit up Kitchen 24 a dope brunch spot. After we slide through west Hollywood we’re going to take a drive down the street and tour the beautiful homes in Beverly hills. Being that we’re in Beverly hills we have to hit up Rodeo Drive and do some slight shopping. After we do that were sliding through to the Dime on Fairfax ave where in this hole in the wall you never know which celebrity you going to see. After the dime, I’m sliding through to the Wilsher lights so my friends can get their iconic photos. The next day we’re hitting up the Santee ally in Downtown LA so my friends can do all their inexpensive shopping. Since most of my friends are business owners si will take them through the wholesale district and let them run wild. After that since were downtown we will most likely go have a meal at Fixins soul food cafe and walk the LA life lot. it’s so much more that we would do but you’re going to have to fly out to LA and see the rest for yourself!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my two universities Virginia State University and Ful sail University. Both universities played a huge role in my success today. VSU is an HBCU and there I learned how to be confident in my blackness when out in a world where the odds are stacked against me. Full Sail, a PWI taught me how to do the work, get the job and keep the job.
