We had the good fortune of connecting with Keilys Martos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keilys, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process to open my own business came to fruition mainly because I was a single mother, also because I love to create art and work well with my hands.  At the time I took the step, I was having anxiety and feeling a bit depressed because of the passing of my Grandmother Cosmelina. If I had taken a job as a massage therapist which is another one of my specialties of my magical hands, I would have had to leave my son in the care of people that I barely knew for 8 to 10 hours a day.  To spend more time with my son and continue being financially productive, I decided to go back to doing what I love, creating art, creating macrame which I learned from my late grandmother Cosmelina.  Anxiety had nearly taken over my life, and I felt that I wasn’t doing what made me happy, I wanted to change that, I wanted my son to be happy and have a role model to look up to.  I wanted my son Santiago to know that if he put his mind and 100% effort into his goals and dreams, he could do whatever he desired.  Macrame during my time of anxiety was my therapy, now it is a part of my heart and soul.  I love being in silence and letting my creativity get carried away by the knots that form my art.  My art is truly made with all my heart.  Macrame has helped me feel whole again, I am happy and able to spend more time with my son.  I took this step to open a business to dedicate my time to create beautiful pieces of art that others can also enjoy as well.  I also decided to name my business after my late Grandmother Cosmelina hence Cosmelina Macrame.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What differentiates me from others is the way my journey has unfolded, the tough times I had to go through and my style which is put together by my hands. Macrame has helped me through a difficult time, and it continues to help me because it continues to be my refuge and it fills me with pride  to see my finished work.  It also fills me with joy to see and hear how people receive and compliment my work, the fact that they support me and will have as part of their lives makes me happy.

Professionally, I think I have a long way to go because I’m a new business owner and  starting a new journey in the United States. It has not been an easy road getting here but my family and my husband give me support to continue trusting in me and in what I do. And my passion and drive to keep bettering myself and my craft keeps growing.

The lessons learned so far have been that being a business owner is not easy, but neither is life, neither is being a single mother when I was. These lessons have taught me to keep being myself because my passion towards my craft keeps me driven and shows me how good I am at creating beautiful art that people enjoy as much as I do.  Also,  has opened my eyes to see my strength and bravery for wanting to turn my passion into a business and that there are many people around me who believe in me and support me. And that’s what I would like for the world to know about me, my brand and my story.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being that I’ve only been here for a short while. I would take them to my favorite places and a few places that tourist would enjoy while visiting Miami. My favorite places to visit since being here is Brickell, there is so much to do and so many different types of food to choose from.  So, I would make a list of a few different place I’ve been too and let them decide where we would go. Definitely would cruise around Brickell and Wynwood. I love Venezuelan food, but there are so many great restaurants and different flavors in this city that we would have to stop at a few different places and show them all that the city has to offer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my late Grandmother Cosmelina. My grandfather passed away before I was born and my Grandmother raised 9 children by herself.  Her dedication to her children inspired me to be a strong independent woman and  become a macrame artist. Not only did she make macrame but she was amazing at croche.
