We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Schenk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a career in music because I couldn’t see myself being happy doing anything else. That sounds dramatic, but I know many musicians feel the same way. Many of my greatest memories stem from creating and experiencing music. In its purest form, my music is an extension of my best and worst self. The people I play music with are like a family to me and it’s hard to imagine not creating with them.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most proud of and excited for my album that will be released in late June. It’s kind of a big amalgamation of my life and composing from 16-21. Some of the songs I have been performing and improving for years and some are much more recent. It deals with moving away from home, obsessive attachments to people, depression, finding my sexuality, and learning to let go. In short, growing into an adult. Megan Wood has created some beautiful pieces to represent these themes for the cover artwork. I’ve worked hard to make them cohesive and create an overarching story of where I’m at right now. We’ve dealt with a lot of hurdles (the pandemic, deciding to move home for 6 months, mixing remotely, my coproducer breaking his foot!) and it will be very rewarding to finally share it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Stephanie’s Crepes by the mile, Lagniappe for live music, Bill Baggs cape and Crandon park on Key Biscayne

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve made some life-changing friendships since I’ve moved to Miami. It would feel wrong to name just one person. The musicians who helped me create my upcoming album are some of the most talented and inspiring people I know. Marty Quinn, Tim Watson, Brahm Masla, Max Schwartz, and Jake Shapiro have brought so much light into my life and music for years at this point. Similarly, Diego Melgar, Matt Clarke, Connor Rohrer, Rosie Weiss, and Marcello Carrelli are a dream to work with. These people are the best of the best and I feel so privileged to play with them. As mixer and co-producer of my upcoming album and recent singles, Andrew Novoa is an integral part of my music and career. My private lesson teacher Alison Wedding and professors at Frost have helped me immensely in finding my voice and broadening my skillset. Lastly, my parents and sister have been supportive of me through everything.
