We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Corrales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, what do you attribute your success to?
What’s really pushing my brand’s success is my total obsession with horror, gaming, and anime. These things truly shape the illustrations and merchandise I make for my shop. This passion keeps me stoked about what I do and lets me connect with my audience and customers in a meaningful and exciting way.
Being a huge fan of horror, games, and anime (which got me dabbling a bit with the Japanese language) helps me make artwork that really clicks with my audience. You can totally see this realness in everything I do, from how I illustrate my work to how I talk about it at in-person events. People can tell when you’re genuinely into something, and that excitement just pulls them in.
At events, I love shooting the breeze with potential customers. We can talk about our top horror flicks, swap anime picks, or geek out over classic video games. It’s not just about selling stuff; these chats build real connections that often turn into long-lasting customer friendships.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been drawing since my early childhood, initially imitating superheroes from comics and eventually developing my own characters throughout middle school. My drawing style was heavily influenced by vintage comic art. Nowadays, I exclusively create digital artwork using my tablet and the Procreate painting app. Within the app, I still stick to the traditional comic creator’s process, starting with pencil sketches, followed by inking and coloring.
While there are numerous artists and companies in this field, I believe that my unique personal touches and distinctive style will set me apart over time. I approach my art with a playful mix of horror and occasional humor, all reflecting my interests. You can easily understand my artistic identity when you visit my website or meet me in person. I’m just a guy who has a passion for horror movies and a penchant for indulging in a bit too much coffee.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love visiting all the little spots in my neighborhood of Shenandoah, nestled between Coconut Grove and Little Havana. With a friend in town, they would get a tour of my favorite haunts, all within my little circle of comfort near my home. If they are hungry when they arrive, we are hitting up Palacio de los Jugos for their massive selection of latin eats. Afterwards, if we weren’t stuffed (seriously, the portions are huge at Palacio de los Jugos) we’ll stop for drinks at my favorite bar in all of Miami, Union Beer Store. Their rotating draft list is incredible, from sours to imperial stouts, and there is alway a spot for me at the bar. I could hang all day there.
For dinner, the obvious choice is Doggi’s Arepa bar for Venezuelan arepas and other treats.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my wife Lindsay, who has put up with my busy weekend event schedule and the mess I am leaving in my wake after every event during this past year and a half. There is so much merch to organize in our small home. She has been truly supportive of me doing something that I love outside of my 9-to-5, and it has given me a creative outlet that was untouched for many years.
