We had the good fortune of connecting with Khila Khani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khila, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been creative and came up with a way to combine my career in law with my desire to create fine art. I want my art to ignite a new perspective on life, evoke positive emotions, and enable others to question reality and how they fit within the world. My photography acts as a conduit between the world of real estate and creativity, fostering the exploration of higher consciousness within your surroundings.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I began the practice of law 25 years ago. I opened my own law practice basically out of law school. While building my practice and raising small children, I had to shelve all my creative interests and/or endeavors. I always loved music and couldn’t hold back anymore. So, when the real estate market was crashing, I found a window of opportunity and created an online music magazine, Rock Cousteau. I was also hoping to pivot into entertainment law. In order to provide content for the magazine, I had to attend the live concerts and capture photographs. As a self-taught photographer, learning how to take pictures in tough light was a gateway to great photography skills. When the real estate market returned, I was needed back in the office and had to turn my attention back to law, full time. But, the passion for photography kept getting stronger. I started using my equipment to take all sorts of pictures, and quietly began snapping wherever I went, building an amazing library of content. As I went along, folks kept telling me that I take great pics! So, in around 2012, I found the domain name was available and formed the entity, iTakeGr8Pics.
Since creating the entity, I have showcased my work in several exhibitions, but because I am still a practicing attorney, going to showcase my work was nearly impossible.

Fast forward to 2020. I print my work, I hang it all over the office, yet the work can’t really be noticed. That’s when it hit me, we have all this wall space, and I can create a gallery myself. Not just for myself, but for all my artist friends who wish to showcase their work.

Additionally, nobody has done this before. The creation of an art gallery inside a law office is a concept I had never heard of, but it made total sense to me. Folks buying real estate need artwork for their properties!

The decision to create a gallery was more than just another entity pursuit, though. Downtown Hollywood has a vibrant art scene, with wall murals, galleries and monthly artwalks. I thought, wouldn’t it be great to have that art enclave expand west towards my block? So, this is the idea….to expand westward and keep the amazing momentum of creative endeavors moving forward.
Art will intertwine with every aspect of our lives, it just made sense to me to create the Art of Law.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
1st, I would take them to my favorite local diner for breakfast called JP’s Bagel place on Hollywood boulevard. If the weather was nice, we’d ride our bikes to the beach. At night, if there was a good show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, I would take my guest there.
I’d find good art shows going on in the area and take them to an art show.
Maybe we would go to dinner near Hollywood beach and eat at Gigi’s.
Maybe we’d go to Dania Pointe And see a show at the Dania Beach Improv.
If there was a good show at the Culture Room, Revolution Live or Parker Playhouse, I’d take them there.
If it were the beginning of December, I would take them to all of the Miami art week events and maybe Art Basel. So, the options are endless.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a few people that have supported me in my journey of life and I would like to recognize them all; my husband, Jay E. Auerbach, my mother who is no longer with us, and my 90 year old father, Fred Khani who continues to guide me every single day.
