We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiara Colon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiara, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Braiding is hard work! You have to put in countless hours to increase speed and refine your work. There is no faking it. The time you dedicate to learn new techniques will show in your styles. This is something that has been around forever but new styles are constantly emerging and you must be open to trying new things and step out of your comfort zone in order to widen your reach.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At this time last year I was starting my last semester in grad school as well as the school year as a second grade teacher. I was accommodating clients whenever I didn’t have school or work. On days I didn’t have class, I would teach from 8am to 3pm and braid from 4pm to midnight. No breaks. When I started braiding, I didn’t expect the outpouring support I received from my community. I was getting more and more clients and with my busy schedule, I was left feeling extremely overwhelmed. Teaching took up a very large portion of my time and it was simply draining. We all know how little teachers make and how much time and work goes into being an educator. Teaching in MDCPS was stressful, therefore I decided to believe in myself and embark in my braiding journey full time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Lucky for me, all my best friends live near me or have lived in my city so they are familiar. My friends and I are happiest when we are on the water. Our ideal week long trip would consist of an early afternoon yacht party with our closest friends. We would drink tequila and eat Publix subs and chicken wings while we sail into the sunset. We would brunch somewhere cute and delicious, maybe Victory Miami or Toro Toro. Alligators are my favorite animals, so I would make sure we visit the Everglades and go on an airboat ride on our beautiful river of glass. We also love relaxing, so a spa visit on south beach to get our chakras realigned is a must.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today without the love and encouragement from my friends, family, acquaintances, and clients. Anyone who has ever mentioned my name in a room full of people, those who have liked, commented or shared my posts, those who book every single month, those who book for special occasions, those who recommend me to their sisters, brothers, mothers, grandmothers and every one in between; THANK YOU. I get to do what I love every day because of your constant support,
